But looking back on it, my shopping habits were kind of crazy, buying new stuff, maybe wearing it once before it gets tossed into the depths of my overstuffed-closet. I’m finding that I may not be able to get my hands on the latest pair of platform gladiator sandals or whatever it the ‘it’ item these days, and it has little really to do with style. It’s more about working out what’s available, and what’s reasonable… and little ingenuity when it comes to wearing a special piece in several ways.

A few weeks ago, I received a package in the mail from the lovely Sophia from Nasty Gal, who’s recently launched her new online boutique. She included a little note specifying that the watercolor peplum was a ’skirt’ but I can probably wear it as a dress.. you bet I’ll wear it as a dress! But upon fiddling with this piece, I thought there was much more potential with this… a dress, yes, but what about wearing it with another skirt? With the right piece it an be an empire waist, or a flapper-like drop waist… or with a blazer for work, and yes.. even a skirt.

It started when I caught wind that Minnie Wilde was having a sample sale, and I couldn’t really go there without going to Painted Bird. Then it was so nice out this weekend, that riding down to the Mission would make for an ideal day. In total, I spent about $164, which purchased two dresses, pants, two sweaters, a skirt, a hat, and a small handbag. Not bad, considering I loved everything I got, and each piece was unique as well as useful in its own right, but looking at all the items together I’m starting to feel like my color palette is changing to more subtle, muted tones… they aren’t so boring as patterns and interesting silhouettes. Here are a a few of the pieces, click on them to get a larger view:

From top left: Minnie Wilde minidress, and Minnie Wilde jodhpurs with button detail. Painted Bird… hand-dyed lace skirt that can be worn as strapless dress. Two vintage sweaters, black with angora and suede details… and suede knit sweater.

I personally think it’s good to have your options open. Lately since it’s been colder, I’ve been living in my chunky knits… this sweater coat to the left, I’ve been wearing all last week, and this week, I’m wearing another vintage number which I’ll show you this weekend. I kind of feel like a slob, but on the other hand, they get compliments, and I’m warm.

Apparently I haven’t been the only one coveting the chunky knits.. Face Hunter seems to be very good about catching women wearing this in a cool way. I was going through my feed subscriptions (if you don’t have yours set up, you should do it, I can’t live without Google reader).
top: Dries van Noten,Véronique Branquinho, Hussien Chalayan, Preen, bottom, images via Face Hunter

As you can see, it’s a total mess. I gave away SIX bags of clothes, and still nothing would fit in there. On my way home, I stopped off at LF (those ladies are soo nice!) on Union Street and took a look at their sale, ended up walking out with a pair of jeans, blouse, and shoes. Uh oh. this got me thinking about as I’m preparing for autumn, people are coming back from their summer vacations, Labor Day is just around the corner… What does my autumn wardrobe going to look like? Do I have cravings? Sure, we all do… but for now, I’m pretty happy with my looks for the season. This is my Summer/Autumn 2007 Transition Wardrobe. My color palette will be grey and blue/purple.

First off… tights/leggings. They are a neccesity in San Francisco… The breeze lasts all year around, so the collection of tights can get quite extensive.

Then below, are dresses. I have millions of dresses, but now I’m feeling that I want to layer them with tights, slips, tees, and the like, so right now, I’m just liking plain dresses I experiment with layers. (Oh my cats love to play with clothes, so don’t mind them)
My blouses, loose fitting, so they can be layered. I like patterns, a trick learned from Nan Kempner, have a short skirt, long skirt, trousers, and lots of tops. Also, one thing I love is ruffles, ties, and gathering.
I don’t wear jeans an awful lot, but yesterday I purchased a pair of corset-top skinny jeans, worn with a long vest, it creates some interesting lines, so as much as I hear high-waisted jeans are for mom’s… thank god, I’ve worked through my mom issues, because personally, I’m getting a lot of use out of my high-waisted jeans. (oh, that’s Stella)
Long sleeve tees and stripey tanks.
Skirts, I have a million of these… but for this autumn, I’m planning wearing my classics… a tweed mini, my grey pencil skirt (it’s almost 10 years old! yikes!) and a fun white floaty skirt.
And here are my shoes. I am always in the mood for more shoes… and these are but a fraction of my collection. But these are the shoes I predict are going to be the main staple of what I plan on wearing this season. I got these Italian riding boots on eBay, haven’t worn them yet, but I have a feeling they’ll come in handy.
And of course, this isn’t everything, but I’m just trying to get a feel for what I’d like to wear this year, so these are just the basic frame work for how I want to dress. Is this some kind of sick thinking? I don’t know… do any of you plan out this early for autumn? What are some pieces you are coveting?

I immediately wanted to play dress up, like a sexed up Annie Hall or something…

Since beginning my new blog The Poste Office, I’ve been looking at men’s clothing in a different light. I really love the idea of mixing stripes and colors, and learning a whole new logic to dressing. I also realized, I had no idea how to tie a tie, but I just remembered seeing it done on TV or the movies or someplace, so I just guessed. It’s really strange how wearing a tie and a vest can change the way you feel, but that’s exactly what it did for me. I don’t know why exactly, perhaps the way a pair of super high heels changes, or red lipstick changes the way you feel. There is a lot of emotional power in attire. Even if it’s for play.

Oh! You can learn how to tie a tie here.

I imagine other people are water skiing on a lake somewhere. But when you live in a place that’s cool in the summer, like San Francisco, or if you live on a coast with a Marine Layer, you probably know what I’m talking about! During these times, I like to celebrate summer by wearing bright colors, and garments from exotic places and layer with simple things that keep me warm, like long sleeve tee’s and scarves.

Tee & Jacket: H&M

As much as it sounds nice to be able to buy a new item of clothing every time there is some new event, the reality is that it’s bad for the bank account. Believe me, it is. So let’s take advantage of a few trends for ‘07, and that is, short and volume. I have two skirts that I love, that I’ve worn a million times. One is a black and white skirt from the Gap, purchased in spring 2004, and the other is an aubergine bubble skirt from H&M purchased in winter 2005. I still wear both the Gap & the H&M skirts, but I think they could be put to an even better use.
One thing I noticed is that my rib cage and my hips are about the same around. so pulling the skirts up to wear as a strapless dress (idea inspired from the Decades YSL dress/skirt). Some skirts will be to short, you can wear them as a blouse, Banana Republic has all these strapless tops. They are cute, but it can be done with what’s in my closet…. this is what I just pulled out:
I’ve been wanting a bubble minidress for a while now… and it’s great to discover I’ve had it all along.
