I profusely apologize for not being good at the whole tagging game. I like seeing other people’s tag posts, but I’m not very good at it. While I’ve been tagged before, and guiltily not keeping in the game, yesterday K-Line got me for a meme that A Spoonful of Sugar tagged a few months ago. Since the same German Phrase Book has been sitting on my desk, I thought I’d take the hint and get on with it.

Here’s how it works:

1. Pick up the nearest book.
2. Open to page 123
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people, and acknowledge who tagged you.

My book, being the Berlitz German Phrase Book & Dictionary, page 123 happens to be about shopping:

Since my Saturday mornings are usually spent at the Frankfurt Flea Market on the Main River, I thought I would share my shopping experience. There is digging, there is haggling, and more digging. But in the end I often come up with a few pieces. Today I was lucky, and found a really cool selection of florals and tie dye. When I come home I try them all on… Rocky will give me the “that looks great on you” bit, usually in English, search for anything that I might have missed that will need mending or stain treatment… then I throw it all in the wash. I realized my sunglasses were either broken, scratched, or too dark for winter, so I got a new pair at Painted Bird. I think they are vintage dead stock, and it’s nice because in the winter you can wear sunglasses that are a bit more playful because it’s not as bright.

This morning, I woke up late, didn’t have time take a shower and properly dress, and since it’s the weekend, I just wore simple black, my American Apparel turtle neck dress (a dress I could live in) and my boyfriends Fillipa K jacket. We spent the afternoon walking around the Mission District where there are tons of beautifully painted buildings, and of course, it’s where all the beautifully hip people are too… a good place to get inspiration.

Featured with photos by Hiroshi Sujimoto . Unfamiliar with the details of Japanese fashion, I really got to appreciate the work of Rei Kawakubo, founder of Comme des Garcons. Even more so looking at this exhibition, it shows that the nature of avant guarde fashion is truly timeless. There were some wonderful Kawakubo chunky knits, but I couldn’t get the images for them, so let’s look at the sculptural dresses:

Personally, I really wanted to steal this dress of the mannequin… you may not be able to see the layering, but there is a pleated skirt peaking out…

Holy moly. That’s sad, but I like my morning oatmeal. So if you are a goody two-shoes like me and you want to celebrate Halloween, here are a few options.

1. Passing out candy.
2. Dressing up, making costumes with what’s in your closet.
3. Visit a haunted house in your neighborhood.

and then there is:
4. Watch scary movies with your friends…. or alone if you are tough enough.

I’m not a die-hard horror freak, but I do like a scary movie here and there, of course there is always Shaun of the Dead, anyone with a sense of humor can watch… but there are also some cool fashionable ones too….

1. Cat People (1942): For the noir at heart
This was the first movie to use your imagination as the monster. A low budget film with a great story line is really fun to watch. It’s considered horror, but it’s not that scary.

2. The Others (2001): Tasteful and creepy
Nicole Kidman stars in this Post WWII ghost story, in foggy England. It’s entertaining, and believable enough to give you the heeby geebies.

3. Night of the Living Dead (1968): A classic, that’s not for rookies.
I’ve seen this before, and written a critical essay on this movie, and I still won’t watch it alone at nite.

4. Cabinet des Dr. Caligari: A movie I want to see, but can never find.
It looks cool, and critically acclaimed, but has anyone actually seen it? Mysterious. If you can get your hands on it, let me know how it is, will ya?

5. Psycho & The Birds… How can you not want to watch Hitchcock?

If you are jaded by films and bad special effects, listening to Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell will creep you out any day of the week. This radio show is about the supernatural, and airs daily. The audience is pretty intense and most believe what they are calling in about is real. If you are not totally laughing your ass off, you may be shivering sleeplessly tonight.

OH and here’s another idea… if you live in a city or particularly haunted area, ghost hunting may be fun. When I lived in Clerkenwell, London, my friends and I would go ghost hunting at the old plague pits and old city of London at 2am. We never found anything except a couple of drunks.

We didn’t have a costume, so we just raided my closet and threw something together. I was a superhero, using my American Apparel swimsuit, leggings, gold belt and opera gloves. Rocky used my boxing gloves and hot pink tank. The undies are his.

It is a collaboration of the Thin Ice Collective and a a selection of German and Russian Artists. I say it was really cool to visit this show, and I’ll post more pics later, but for now, I tell you the real reason I went was to meet Serena Cole, I had interviewed here back in May, and I haven’t seen her work in person since. She creates these mythic portraits based on photos of fashion models. I tell you, it was incredible, the piece titled The Gilded Throne, was just incredible, the gold-leafing on paper, the delicate pencil drawing and the pressed flowers. It is just such a rich and stunning piece of art. Unfortunately, I arrived early, before anyone else, so I didn’t get to meet her in person. I’m pretty sad about that! Next time…

She’s my favorite SF street fashion photographer. Last night, we ran into each other at the Fecal Face 7.5 anniversary party. I have never met her, but she recognized me, well because of all the pictures I take of myself. Ha! Again, it was lovely to chat with another blogger, and somehow comforting that we had a few more similar interests than compulsively posting. She’s fabulously dressed by the way… I just adore the way she’s mixed neons and greys…. lovely.

Actually, it was born out of a conversation Natalie from Coquette and I had at the Nan Kempner press preview… I tell you, it was so nice to get to meet everyone in person, and see Natalie again. It’s so strange how cool and comfortable it was to chat in person! I was particularly delighted to meet Liz from The Goods!, Gabrielle from Mama, and M.I.S.S. Michelle. They are so lovely. Also I got to meet Stiletto Jungle, The Rad Report, and a couple of bees from Style Hive.
