“Instead of being choosy, you’ll go for almost anything…” Perfect for Sunday music, Berlin based, Soffy O, sings this lovely song Everybody’s Darling. To be honest, I hadn’t heard about her before even though she’s been around for a while making electroclash classics like Missy Queen’s Gonna Die. Rocky got all excited when I asked him about this… I missed it somehow, but she has my attention now.

Why on earth haven’t I posted about Kid Sister before… I love her music. Last year, I saw her in concert, and she was absolutely amazing, how she really got the crowd in a good mood, her energy, was great, the music catchy, she’s really done a great job of making a bit 80’s retro breakbeats mixed with electronic and rap in a really good way. Pro Nails is one of those songs in my rotation, and I ALWAYS sing a long. So, Kid Sister, I’m very sorry I haven’t posted about you sooner. You are darling.

Granted I’m more of the nerdy and overstimulated persuasion.. I do like this, yet another Scandinavian cool band, Helsinki trio Le Corps Mince de Françoise, campy and quirky, their sound lies between CSS and Kid Sister (why haven’t I done a post about her yet… she’s awesome).

Also, for all you London Ladies and Gents, they’ll be playing at the Notting Hill Arts Club this Friday… if you don’t have your dance card filled up for that day.

While I don’t like to post too many times on the same topic, but since just these past few weeks, I’ve really been loving Ladyhawke… apparently Karl Lagerfeld feels the same way choosing Paris is Burning for part of the Chanel SS09 runway show. Aside from being a great designer, Karl’s also got a keen ear for upcoming music, discovering Vive le Fete and also, DJ’ing the Grand Theft Auto IV radiostation.. haha, what doesn’t this man do?

I’m not sure how I found Ladyhawke, but I tell you I feel a bit of a kindred spirit, well, sort of a girl crush, she’s rockin and she loves cats. My two favorite things besides.. you know, fashion. She’s come out with her debut album ‘Ladyhawke‘ this year and is currently on tour.

Every now and then, I wonder, hope, pray that with early 90’s vintage fashion seeping into the collective conscious,  early 90’s music will come along with it. I’m not talking about pop music as much as indie bands of that era. Not without their hipster tendencies, wayfarer clad Magic Wands, Chris & Dexy Valentine based out of Nashville, Tennessee have a few love infested songs out. My favorite is Teenage Love, its sweet and irreverent, and why shouldn’t  love be that way?

In 2007 while living in Nashville, Chris found a song on Myspace that he listened to repeatedly, day and night. Soon he discovered it was a song by Dexy, called ‘Teenage Love’. During the course of the summer 2007 Chris and Dexy started talking on the phone until dawn, writing songs for each other and mailing gifts such as toy lions, old records, handwritten poems and one glowing heart lamp. Though 2000 miles apart, they decided they were destined to be. Two weeks later Chris was back in L.A. helping Dexy pack up her old Mercedes Benz for a trip across the country. ~Ark Recordings

Nothing’s more perfect on a Sunday Morning than a bit of 1960’s French Pop music… well, the Rolling Stones are good too, but this morning I’m more in the mood for Françoise Hardy, singer, actress, fashion icon. Inspiration for designers (ie Balenciaga ‘05) and style mongers for years, it’s amazing how even today, her style is timeless, as opposed to other pop stars of the early ’60s you know… the ones with beehives, I love them… but they aren’t exactly timeless.

Finally, I asked for a spelling, and sure enough, I’ve become a full fledged convert. Cool songs, described as powdered sugar pop, but I think that’s being too humble. It’s nice to listen to… she’s on tour, for those of you going to the show in Berlin, I’m so envious, it’s sold out and  by Nov 1 she’ll be in San Fran… so if you’re looking for a post-Halloween show to nurse you’re hangover, this might be the one for you.

I particularly love country music from the 50’s and 60’s where the lines between country and rock ‘n’ roll are blurred in popular music of the time. The haunting voices singing stories of heartbreak and loneliness to eerily upbeat music creates a sensation that few pop songs of today can even compare.

Here are three artists, who in fact were groundbreaking musicians of their time, the beloved Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells, the first woman to top country charts, and Wanda Jackson, the first female rock musician.

Patsy Cline

At the age of 30 Patsy Cline’s life was cut short in at the height of her career, she has left a legacy as one of the greatest singers of all time. Her haunting voice is often heard singing Crazy and Walkin’ After Midnight here we have a lesser known but compelling Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray

Kitty Wells

In 1952 Kitty Wells was the first woman to top the US Country Charts, with It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels blaming cheating men for creating cheating women. Ms. Wells is attributed to paving the way for other female artists who rejected the submissive stereotype of women of that time, I particularly the juxtaposition between Kitty Wells and the Stand by Your Man mentality. Wanda Jackson


Wanda Jackson began her career singing country gospels, but in 1954 she went on tour with Elvis Presley whom she dated, and was influenced to move away from country and try rock and roll, becoming the first woman to perform rock music. At the time rock and roll was controversial by itself, but with her intense voice and fringy low cut dresses she made quite the image of the bad girl, even though she was actually quite nice.
