One of my favorite quotes from 30 Rock, is Kenneth saying to Liz Lemon, “Your thin, but you’re not New York thin.” Meaning it as a compliment of course (does Kenneth ever say anything mean?). While fashion week is certainly not the place for body acceptance, it’s interesting to see when designers quit literally take on the curves of human form. Antonio Berardi, supported by Peroni Nastro Azzurro,  debuted his winter collection, that paid homage to rococo and the human form, he says, “I want to give the impression of curves without cutting into the body.” The literal curves mixed with geometric sequins, tailored into the gowns, the peplums creating a more hourglass shape along with Matisse like cut out shapes on the backs of coats. It all was quite lovely, modern and very lady like.

Who can ever get tired of Egyptian motifs? There seems to be countless ways you can freshen up the inspiration, including mixing it in a late 80′s science fiction way. Topshop Unique did it models slicked back hair and gold leaf blobs combed back, spandex, bomber jackets, and platform flats there were a lot of trend pieces you can latch on to, but the Egyptian hieroglyphics and gold winged shoes made for a really fun collection. I loved the gold, pink, black and turquoise palettes and heavy paneling that’s true to the Topshop aesthetic. All in all I’d say it was a fun show… and will I be wearing this next season? Let’s just say I’m practicing my Egyptian walk.

Oh my, the last few outfits I’ve been showing you have been pretty buttoned up, almost to almost Victorian levels. Almost. Usually I like to dress down for Sundays, but being fashion week, I had to look somewhat put together, somewhat! Perhaps it’s a nod to what I remember of the 90′s or maybe I’m just feeling more buttoned up, but way back when, all I remember about my wardrobe is that my mom was bugging me about dressing in potato sacks. Long, flowing, and somewhat modest, but not modest at all. I mean how modest is a see thru skirt? Anyway… it’s been a lot of fun dressing up everyday of the week, normally, I have different levels of dressedupness we’ll see how things evovle when I head out to London!

This season I’ve been camped out at Milk Studios doing coverage of every show I can get my hands on. It’s been a fun week working with Susie Bubble who is helping create coverage for IFB NYFW. When you’re seeing all the shows come together, you tend to look for patterns. Sometimes metaphorically and sometimes in this case, quite literally. Part of me wonders if that’s because that’s what I’m feeling at this moment and am very excited to see what I want to wear at this moment, kind of like playing “slug bug” you never see VW Bugs until you start looking for them, then it’s slug away! Ouch! Well this season we have a bit of a less painful yet still playful approach to the pattens and textures we’re seeing on the runways. My favorite show as of yet was Suno who took black and white and made quite a Victorian abroad approach. The bold patterns and delicate embroidery was also echoed in NAHM‘s sophomore collection as well, such beautiful patterns and buttoned up approach with a romantic edge. I also quite enjoyed Peter Som’s more classic approach, the houndstooth and lace with pretty floral prints were very ladylike as well as the Spring with an Autumn twist of Costello Tagliapietra. All of these together makes me keep an eye out for the patterns between now and next spring. Well, it was something I was doing already… and will happily continue.

Getting dressed for the IFB Conference is always tough. I never know what to wear, should I be over the top? Should I be comfortable? How do I best describe the way I’m feeling during that time… This year I decided to go with a Cynthia Vincent dolman maxi dress with a digital Aztecan print, it’s a bit boho hippie and as much as I try, that’s just not my scene. The dress had an amazing print, and I’m just loving it so much at the moment it was great to incorporate that in the outfit, but it needed something to make it more urban and less hippie, I added the citron collar by Eleven Objects (as per suggested by Chelsea at Cynthia Vincent) it was a great way to transform the dress. The outfit carried me through the day and into the night!

The first show of fashion week for me is always a bit of a mixed bag. Groggy from the IFB Conference festivities, excited to see the future of a new season, scared to see all the fashion stars and heroes. We were really happy to see a lot of faces from the bloggosphere, Susie Bubble, Lovely Wanderlust and I got yelled at by an old fashion journalist for not knowing her latest project. Oh whatever.

These last few season at Milk Studios, I really enjoyed the Cushnie et Ochs with their highly tailored suits and beautiful cut out motifs. This season, the color palette was similar, black and white, but with spring colors mixed in cheery pinks and candy lemon. I loved the button down looks with crisp blazers contrasted with rather risque cut our evening dresses. You’d really have to be a fierce woman to carry it off. Certainly something to aspire to. I can’t believe NYFW is already here. At the moment I’m sitting in the Milk Gallery waiting for the IFB Conference to start setting up. Yikes! The last month it’s been a whirlwind, and usually I forget to do any shopping at all, but this year, I decided not to let that happen. Above is a selection of clothing that I’m wearing for the weeks ahead. I’ve decided to go the classic with a bold twist I’ve been feeling lately. Things like bright purple pants with a  contrast button down shirt…. a red pencil skirt (you know how I live pencil skirts!) an detachable collar to mix things up.. and of course sensible shoes. I’m sticking to this even at fashion week!

I’m sure I’m missing something…

Even the most over the top accessories really rely on the details. When you go over the top with crystal eye masks and head pieces, giant necklaces there’s the fine line between making a statement and just being gaudy. Jewelry design trio Erickson Beamon walks that line and delightfully so. With Swarovski crystals galore mixed with gold plating, they mix trends, vintage inspiration, with something very modern and young. I went to their presentation during fashion week (how did it slip the cracks of my coverage? I love this exhibition) they presented their pieces on ballerinas on scaffolding, and even got the violinist from Black Swan to play creepy classic tunes all night. I loved the mix… like where would you wear a necklace like that… “to the ballet!” Like we ever go to the ballet. Well, one day we will.

I also like how Erickson Beamon has been around since 1983… and they’re quite the cult jewelry label having clients like Michelle Obama and Lady Gaga, yet and doing collaborations with Target and selling on Net-A-Porter,  somehow keeping that emerging vibe. It’s hard to keep it fresh, and these ladies do it.
