Brazilian Blowout at Revamp Salon

by jennine on August 16, 2010

brazilian blowout

For the past few years, the battle of the frizz has become an all out war (see below). My hair gets so frizzy, part of it is wavy, but for the most part, it frizzes. So much so I stare at people who have shiny locks and wish for my hair to be the same. Why not straighten my hair? Well, it never stays straightened, by the end of the day it’s back to the frizz. Curling? forget about it. My hair always assumes a wild stance no matter what you do it it.

See the FRIZZ?!?

Thanks to Christina at Profresh Style who recommended Shannon Dean at Revamp Salon, I made an appointment to get a Brazilian Blowout, which I heard worked miracles for women who battle the frizz every day. I love the waves, just not how it looks dry and frizzy. Brazilian Blowouts are different from straighteners because they still give a bit of bounce.

Going Brazilian…

Yesterday, we did a cut, color and the Brazilian. It’s recommended you color first, because coloring will strip everything out, the color was very brassy, so we just did something simple to get it looking nice. Then we did the Brazilian Blowout, it was a process, but it wasn’t as long as I thought it would be and it was painless. Then we cut, I thought I wanted a bob with bangs again, but last night when I got home, the blunt bangs didn’t work for me at all. So I just did the side sweep. What happened? I used to love my blunt bangs!

This morning, I washed out my hair, you can never really tell if you’re going to like a cut when the stylist does it, the real test is doing it yourself. Well, lo and behold, a hair dryer and my hands (not even a brush) and my hair was silky straight and shiny. Wow.

Update: Some of you asked how long it lasts…they say three months. It’ll let up on the straightness in a few weeks so the body will come back soon.

Would I do it again?

The only thing is now, I’m not used to my hair being so straight! I try to fluff it out and tousle it to get a bit more volume, but apparently it’ll take a few weeks to get that back. My hair is very fine, so I’m not surprised by how well it took to the treatment.

I’ve had my share of hair phobia, mostly because I hope that maybe, just maybe a hairdresser could make my wild hair tame. It now is clear that it wasn’t them giving me a bad cut, it was my hair and it’s natural texture. Now it’s possible to grow long without looking disgusting. So yes, I would do it again… it’s only been a day, and I can’t imagine life without the Brazilian Blowout.

SO gorgeous, Jennine!!

Hmmm… since my hair has been growing out (for the first time in really years), I’ve discovered this odd little kink and flip on the back of my head…. I’ve been thinking about just perming my hair to disguise it, but maybe this would be a good option for getting it more straight (like the rest of my hair) and from frizz in the humidity….

oh yes, i’d say it’s a great option. the only thing is it’s not cheap, like a lot of hair treatments. i just had enough of hoping my hair would stop being so frizzy, i tried literally everything they have on the market to no avail.

grace August 16, 2010 at 4:44 pm

it looks amazing!

I tried bangs recently after a long break without them. I had bangs almost my entire life. But this time it was terrible and i felt like it added 10 years to my face. ugh.

Do they use chemicals when they blow it out? how do they get t to stay straight after a washing?

jennine August 16, 2010 at 5:01 pm

haha, you know, the same thing happened to me last night, i really really did not like how the bangs looked, like they brought out my puffy eyes. the side swept isn’t so bad though.

and yes, they do use chemicals. i’m not sure exactly which ones though.

I’m so glad to read about your experience. I’m getting a Brazilian Blowout next month and I’ve been anxious about it. Like you – I’m not used to having straight hair ALL the time. I like a little variety. But my hair is so thick it’s just frizz city. The other pitfall is the price (way more than I would normally pay). But I’ve heard its amazing so I’m going to try it. Can’t wait to hear how it holds up over the next few weeks.!

I did my first Brazilian at the start of summer and the only downside is the cost and if you add in a cut and color cost you’re definitely looking at a few $100. I got mine at a new client price of $175 but the stylist who did it normally charges $300 a session. Definitely not cheap. I would still recommend it though. I was amazed at how my frizz vanished. I have naturally wavy/curly hair with a ton of little baby hairs that frame my face in a halo of frizz ever summer but the BB made them disappear! I’m very low maintenance on hair so I loved not having to worry about anything. It was perfectly straight for a few weeks then a light wave started coming back but it was kind of limp so I had to run the flat iron over it, but the frizz stayed away until about 3 weeks ago which would have made it 11 weeks of frizz free hair.

oh yeah, i almost had a heart attack, i prepared myself, but i didn’t prepare enough… that said, a lot of beauty treatments aren’t cheap, like getting a massage, a facial, and well the other brazillian… all of those aren’t cheap either, and i figure if it lasts 3 or 4 months, then it’s definately worth it, especially considering all the products i would spend money on.

so glad you like it! the color looks so rich and healthy :)
as for the bangs, it’s probably also a bit of shock, but they look great straight and side-swept.
see you in nyc if not sooner!

AlysonIsNeat August 16, 2010 at 5:45 pm

oh wow, i got the bottle of surfer spray by bumble and bumle it’s great so far, but i think you have to use it for a while… still getting the hang of that.

I too suffer from the frizz debacle, yet my hair is fine and straight. It’s more so near my scalp that I have the frizz problem.

It looks fab! I feel your frizz pain, when I had my daughter my hair changed texture from silky pin straight to wavy frizz. Last year after reading so much about the Brazilian Blowout, i did a little sleuthing. I found a natural alternative you can do at home that worked wonders! i wrote about it here: http://ideefixemon.blogspot.com/2009/08/soft-liss-at-home-keratin-treatment.html I seriously need to do it again, today my hair is a mass of frizz so bad I think I may have scared small children!

Suzanne aka Punk Glam Queen August 16, 2010 at 8:54 pm

There are a few versions. The one I did myself says you can wash it the next day. To be safe I waited two, but it was fine the next time I did it and washed it the next day. XXX S.

I am strongly considering getting the Brazilian blowout too. I am a california girl, and I am moving to the humid south in two weeks. I am TERRIFIED to think about trying to wear my hair straight in humid atlanta. I am pretty sure that I’ll have a full blown ‘fro in about 15 minutes…

I am using the Coppola Keratin Complex shampoo and conditioner and even without the expensive $300 salon treatment I see and feel a difference. My hair just feels silkier and seems to stay better.

Humidity this summer has been a constant battle. Looking forward to Fall for both my hair and the fashion.

You look so beautiful, Jennine! (I love your lipstick shade you’re wearing too… what brand/color is it?) As a fellow frizzy-locks gal, this sounds like an utter dream to have frizz-free hair! My biggest problem is loosing the wave/curl though–since you said it makes your hair straight, correct? Having slightly “bed-head” locks has become a signature look for me over the years, but I do grow tired of the frizz (and constantly trying different anti-humidity/de-frizzing serums! lol.). ;)

Les Deux - Katie August 17, 2010 at 8:41 am

I think we seriously share hair genes. I’ve got the same issues with my lackluster hair, and I’ve been considering a Brazilian Blowout for ages now, having read about it everywhere. It’s just so expensive, especially for a college student (me). But your post may have me re-considering where I invest my money this month.

LOOKS GREAT! I have the exact same problem (except compounded by a crappy cut I need to grow out)…so you were able to wash next day? I’m so used to hearing no water for 3 days. Would love to find someone in the Pasadena or Valencia area in LA to do it.

Christina H August 17, 2010 at 5:03 pm

I want to do this, but because I have long hair and a ton of it, I can’t find any place in SF that will do it for less than $350 (that’s just the Brazilian blowout, not including haircut or color). I was quoted $450 minimum at a salon on Grant Ave. I can’t see myself blowing $500+ on my hair on one day. I guess I’ll have to live with my horrible frizz. :(

Nickie Frye August 17, 2010 at 6:02 pm

My hair is cuckoo crazy too. I’ve finally found a way to blow dry it so it looks reasonable, but sometimes I am lazy & I just let it air dry. That’s when the party really gets started. ;) Anyway, I love your new look. xoxo

I have VERY straight hair (metis on my moms side) so it’s not an issue for me, but I have friends who would definitely be interested in this! Hey lady.
It’s been about a month now since you got your blowout. Are you still happy?
Your hair still looks great on the most recent pics of you here on the blog, but I have to ask.
I’m thinking of getting one, but there’s the issue of $$$…

jennine October 4, 2010 at 5:09 pm

yes! it’s gone from a nice to have to a have to have. i really love my hair now for the first time ever.
its a bummer it’s so expensive, but at the same time, i don’t get my hair cut very often and i’m not a blond. so it works out no?

Korka October 4, 2010 at 5:19 pm

If it made me love MY hair too, then spending some extra money doesn’t seem too extravagant…
Maybe I’ll buy myself one for Christmas…
Thanks so much!

i got the brazillian blowout on my hair just a few weeks ago aswell, and i absolutely love it. But I would never get it done again after i found out that Health Canada has issued a warning to salons to stop using the product immediately, after finding it contained dangerous levels of formaldehyde, a preservative that’s been linked to cancer.

Bella Blu November 24, 2010 at 10:29 pm

If you use keratin products and you don’t want a completely flat finish, try leaving it on for less time and going easy on the straightening phase during treatment…
