Button Down Unbuttoned: Blue & Belts

by jennine on June 11, 2010

blue dress

See, this is my issue with posting outfits several times a week, I get on kicks. Whether it’s a color, a shape, a theme, or even a mood, either that or it’s completely erratic. Maybe you can’t trust me, I’ll change my mind about what I like to wear any second now. Who knows? I don’t!

This week, it seems like I’m all about blue and belts. Last month, when I met the lovely Love Maegan for an interview, she wore a chambray shirt with a scalloped dress underneath. It was perfect. I’ve tried the shirt over dress a few times since, and this is my first interpretation here. Sophia at Nasty Gal had given me this BB Dakota ruched ikat bustier dress, but I just am not able to wear a strapless short dress in public, unless…well never. Unless it’s properly layered. I’ve worn this dress with this shirt before (and not photographed it) but it was styled differently. Today, I decided to wear a belt over the shirt for shape, and put on a the Liz Larios necklace to make me a little more fancy.

Wearing: Chambray shirt: H&M •  Dress: BB Dakota courtesy of Nasty Gal • Necklace: courtesy of Liz Larios • Belt: Flea market • Ring : Wendy Brandes • Shoes: Aldo

I really like this look! The mix of blues is lovely and the open buttoned shirt is a great alternative to a cardigan layer that I probably haven’t rocked since the 90s. But I am grateful for this reminder. The belt over top really modernizes the entire mix! You look great as always! I know what you mean about getting into a pattern of reaching for specific colors. Because I don’t change handbags daily or anything, it is often easier to stick with a similar palette.

oh yes, i used to love both cardigans AND open shirts in the 90s… but your’e right the belt makes is current, i didn’t even think about that!

I like the contrast of the girly dress with the more menwear-ish shirt. AND I’m still loving the shoes!

Ooh, I love it belted! …and I love those blue shoes! I too have a problem with strapless dresses. I just hate having to fidget with my clothes and I’m always yanking on strapless making sure they’re in place. Happy Friday!

I totally love this look. I, too, have trouble in strapless, and I think I could manage something like this. Thanks for the tip!

yeah, there are a lot of cute strapless dresses out now, you just can’t wear them any day of the year.

LOVE this look! I actually recently bought a denim shirt- http://daniellesotherblog.blogspot.com/2010/04/poll-should-i-buy-this-shirt.html- and have been trying to find new ways to wear it. This was inspiration for me!

Yes, I love this look. I have a few vintage denim/chambray shirts in my shop right now & I’ve been tying them at the waist over dresses & over maxi skirts worn as strapless dresses. I love this look. It’s the summer version of a denim jacket. A total staple.

I love the dress and shirt combo. I always try to do something like this with a cardigan and belt, but I can never figure out where to belt it, and I feel like it always looks not quite right!! I’m going to have to give it another try. Also, these shoes really are fantastic – twice in one week and I can’t get enough!

I LOVE IT! I love those shoes! I also don’t really wear strapless. I like to know everything is staying in place nicely without having to worry/look down every other second! LOL I love it belted! So beautiful! Happy Friday! Have a nice weekend!

So lovely! I love how the chambray shirt overtop really tones down what would be an otherwise more cocktail-appropriate dress (as opposed to a strict day dress). Fantastic! I keep seeing oxford shirts used in such fun ways around the ‘net; I think I need to replenish my collection and start looking at them in a new way!

Katie July 1, 2010 at 7:44 am

I’m crazy about the contrast of the casual rolled up button down with the dressier bustier cocktail frock AND the girly dress vs. the menswear-ish over sized shirt! Double contrast! It’s the Ira Levin novel of outfits (re: loads of layers)!
