Coordinating Outfits: Bow & Beau

by jennine on April 6, 2010

polka dot vintage

The ‘partner look’ has always kind of scared me a little. You know, the Beckhams had their matchy-matchy days, celebrity couples do it all the time. It’s weird. However, subliminally couples do tend to dress alike on a day to day basis, through color schemes, themes, even if it’s not so obvious. This morning, Rocky and I walked into the living room (I get dressed in my walk-in closet, he in the bedroom) both wearing black. Thank god we weren’t going anywhere together this morning, else I would have made him wear something different… he eventually did anyway.

On Easter, we met some friends for a late lunch, and this time we actually coordinated with each other to have a little ‘Easter-y’ vibe to our attire, and ended up both wearing polka-dot bows. Rocky is now warming up to bow-ties which I absolutely adore, and think more men should be wearing bow-ties on a regular basis. I wore my new favorite yellow polka-dot dress. Strangely, it fun to dress up together, we did it in a tasteful manner (I think), not wearing the same colors, not wearing matching outfits, but wearing complimentary colors in a consistent theme. Kind of like saying in a more obvious way, ‘We’re a family’.

So, do you ever coordinate your attire with your partner?

I sure as hell hope you & Rocky get that photo printed and framed for your house! You two look amazing.

Sometimes Garren and I coordinate when we’re “costuming” (for lack of better word)– his Mad Hatter costume coordinates with my Alice pieces, for example. It’s harder to imagine 2 more distinct dressers though… his color palette and style is the opposite of mine! Though I am dying to get him into a pink tie…

jennine April 6, 2010 at 11:40 am

oooh that’s even better… we’ve done costuming before, but yeah, having similar color palets helps.
:)

Ashe Mischief April 6, 2010 at 8:26 pm

I’m certain it does! I think you and Rocky do “matching” perfectly, which is by complimenting each other more than coordinating or matching…. if I could get Garren in polka dots, I’d die a happy girl. As it is, he’s ALWAYS teasing my love of them.

You guys look absolutely adorable, I love especially love the dress. I did coordinate with one of my first boyfriends, but it wasn’t really cute, it was actually quite ridiculous (matching death cab for cutie tee shirts anyone?)

jennine April 6, 2010 at 11:40 am

hehehee, that’s awesome.

Sheena April 6, 2010 at 11:18 am

I think you both look very stylish and very tasteful, plus very appropriate for Easter. I don’t have a partner, but if I did, I do think it would be fun for me and him to coordinate our outfits from time to time, but not in a too matchy-matchy way. You both look very natural in your coordination, which is what I would also shoot for.

jennine April 6, 2010 at 11:41 am

oh yes, we never were really into it consciously, but i’ve also done it with girlfriends too!

AlysonIsNeat April 6, 2010 at 11:23 am

Sometimes, Sam and I will dress alike, BUT we don’t live together. Its mostly completely accidental! I remember this Christmas we were attending a Christmas service at our church. I had taken a lot of time meticulously picking out a cute but casual outfit consisting of maroon corduroys and a gray t-shirt/cardigan combo. Sam showed up at my door wearing maroon corduroys. When we dress similar its never intentional. But our styles are really similar so it doesn’t surprise me that we both end up wearing similar looking outfits.

hahah, you two must be made for each other! maroon cords..that’s awesome.

well, you two are a great looking couple! maybe we will frame this…we’re still working on framing things…

lisa April 6, 2010 at 11:27 am

You’re both so stylish! I love how you complement each other in your outfits and the motifs (bows, polka dots) but you aren’t matchy-matchy to the point of cheesiness. Well done.

Hmm the boy favours more casual looks, and sometimes if I know we’ll be spending time together I consciously dress down a little. I don’t think he has my style pegged yet…last time I asked him to describe it he only came up with the adjective “random.”

jennine April 6, 2010 at 11:47 am

oh yes, guys like to do the casual thing a lot, though i think that’s changing. i’ve come across a few more guys who have started dressing up more… though they’ll still be caught wearing sweatshirts and jeans. what are you going to do?

Poochie April 6, 2010 at 11:30 am

We sometimes do unintentionally but never on purpose. Although we did for NYE. If we end up looking to matchy we think we look odd.

But you both look great here!

Maile John April 6, 2010 at 11:32 am

You guys look great! Not too matchy, matchy at all. Now my sister and her boyfriend are little Beckhams in the making. They get their hair colored together, toenails painted together, buy two of everything! It sounds silly but it makes my heart melt a bit knowing they like taking on the world like that together.

The picture is so cute! You guys look great.

We (my hubs and me) don’t mean to wear something matchy- matchy. But for some reason we end up wearing the same exact color or type of clothing even if we haven’t had a peek at each other, you know what I mean? Its really weird….

Franca April 6, 2010 at 11:54 am

Such an adorable photo, and just the right amount of coordination.

My boyfriend lives in tshirts, whereas I am more dressy, so it almost never happens by accident, but we have done similar colours before and recently, I was getting all dolled up in a vintage style he put on a vintage military jacket. I like matching (as long as its subtle, not identical fabrics or anything) and wish we would match more often!

Angeline April 6, 2010 at 11:59 am

We don’t match on purpose–my husband is so not into anything fashionable (he gets to go to work in Volcom tees, jeans, and flipflops).

But I love the way you two coordinated without being matchy matchy. So complementary!

Although I’m halfway ashamed to admit it…when I was 13 years old, my best friend and I bought matching clothes on a couple of occasions. Head-to-toe. I honestly don’t know what we were thinking! Since then it seems I’ve been trying to make up for it by always dressing differently than everyone else, including hubby. However, I love the way you and Rocky coordinate in the overall theme – but both have your own look. After seeing this, I may have to try coordinating with hubby a little more going forward. Your photo is adorable!

Mallory - Miss Malaprop April 6, 2010 at 1:44 pm

That is very possibly the cutest couple picture ever. I agree, get that thing framed and put it on your mantle!

We occasionally coordinate a bit when we go out, but we usually don’t think about it too much. I guess we try to match the level of dressiness as opposed to actually matching colors or styles very much, if that makes sense.

You look gorgeous there! Such a Mad Men mood ;)
And God no, we never dress alike, my boyfriend doesn’t take any interest in fashion, i pratically buy all his clothes. No wait i do buy all his clothes! He! But he likes it simple, black, grey, brown… Not me ^__^

we don’t do it on purpose, but we often end up wearing the same colors. i tried to get him to wear the vintage his and hers red wool hunting jackets i found in the fall, but we both agreed it was a bit much. matching colors though, a lot.

you guys look amazing!

Styleabaad April 6, 2010 at 3:42 pm

You’re a really cute couple I have to say first of all, I love both of your outfits. Me and my fiancé sometimes coordinate a little, especially on more festive occasions. I think the trick is, like you say, to do it in a very sublime way. Too matchy-matchy can be tacky-tacky.

fantastic family photo! My fiance and I dress up alike sometimes not on purpose-and other times on purpose-like when we go to baseball games and we wear coordinating jersey’s for saint patrick’s day in green or we dress up in a “couples” costume for halloween. I love the coordination that you two pulled off!

fran April 6, 2010 at 4:21 pm

You look SO cute, and the matching is perfect :) )

I too love to coordinate with my bf in subtle ways . He loves wearing simple, plain t-shirts (I’m way more elaborate), but sometimes, for parties, we coordinate, for example, a color on his plaid shirt with my dress, or even my tights. Or in a gala party, my accesories with his tie and so on. Is fun but not too obvious or tacky!
It’s true that sometimes couples end up wearing matching outfits without thinking about it! I’ve seen it with us all the time…I don’t know why, but it tends to happend with our shoes…

I’m getting a delicious Mad Men vibe from you! And I love it :) The Mr. and I love wearing stuff from the same color family (grey, whites and blacks) so we often end up looking like pale mirrors of one another when we go out. It’s unintentional, but it happens!

What a great photo. I think the more time you spend with a person – be it your husband or a close friend – you eventually do dress alike. I look at groups of friends walking down the streets and mostly they do dress alike. I guess that’s why they’re friends.

there was a rash of matching couples at parties this weekend. chances are, you’re gonna fancy someone with a similar style, thus the matching outfits. & like art, sometimes you gotta know the rules in order to break them. i didn’t see many couples pulling it off this weekend -lots of head to toe tom’s & american apparel- but if you mix it up right it can be really hot

I don’t coordinate with Jon mostly because he wears a lot of gray and I don’t. He’s much more classic, while I pile on the entire closet and cannot stay away from color… But maybe we should try it!

I do sometimes… i like when partners are complimentary or have subtle nods in one’s look to the other. In fact my grandparents have often showed up to events in ensembles that are in sync with each other, but I guess that also startes to happen a little naturally after 50years of marriage.

Of course, you want to avoid matching or wearing overly similar pieces, but I do think it’s nice to coordinate and make a pretty visual picture!
