New Haircut

by jennine on January 7, 2010

Asked the hairdresser for shoulder length and he gave me a short bob, so I’m freaking out a little.

What do you think? Is it ‘mom’ hair?

Not the least bit mom-like!!!

I love it, especially on a stylish person like you!

jennine January 7, 2010 at 8:51 pm

thanks my dear! :)

Glendy January 7, 2010 at 7:50 pm

OMG Def Not mom hair, have you tried to flat iron it? It might give you a more femme falate look, I had a bob about 3 years ago but it was cut in an A line, I loved it but it was too costly to maintain so I just grew it out. It looks fab! I guess it will take a bit getting used to :)

Much love and happy new year!

is it kind of like blunt cut bangs? a line bobs are so nice!

mercie ghimire January 7, 2010 at 7:54 pm

awww, you sound so sad! cheer up!! you don’t have mom hair! once you wash and style it a few times, you’ll figure out a funky way to rock that bob! i promise! whenever i get my haircut, the new hair is always tough to style the first few times. your hair needs to adjust. maybe, if you’re so inclined, you can cut a few layers yourself to make it a bit edgier? i cut my own bangs (after following a tutorial online) and they came out really well. anyway, no need to fret. you look a beautiful as ever!

jennine January 7, 2010 at 8:53 pm

that’s true, i only had one stylist that could cut and style the way i liked it consistently. but most often it takes getting used to! i’m actually trying to grow my bangs out, so maybe i’ll hold off for a while.

Ev`Yan || apricot tea. January 7, 2010 at 7:56 pm

Oh my god, as a hairstylist this absolutely MADDENS me. To know that the stylist didn’t take the time to fully get an accurate idea of the exact cut you wanted… ugh, it boils me. As stylists, we’re trained to know that short for some people might mean something completely different to others. Which is why we’re SUPPOSED to be as specific as we can about what we’re doing, & even ask “Is this okay? Are you sure?” a few times just to be sure. It’s obnoxious, but at least we’ll know that the customer is pleased.

This doesn’t make your stylist a bad stylist! Not in the least. It just means that he/she didn’t truly take the time to understand what you were wanting. & the shitty part about this is that he went too short, & that is a mistake you cannot undo.

I’m sorry to vent here & not talk about the REAL pressing question which is: How do I look? Jennine, I think you look fantastic! Then again, you would look great in any style because of your bone structure. :]

Just make sure that you specifically show to him/her what you consider shoulder-length (you measured at your collarbone). Unless you did that already & he/she still cut it short… & in that case, you might need to find a different stylist.

But you look smashing! I’m kind of jealous of your bob, because I want one.

oh my, you’re a hairstylist? this makes so much sense! that’s why your hair is always so perfect!
but yeah, i was amazed by how much shorter it was than i had asked for, at first i couldn’t tell becuase my hair was wet. to say the least i’m not going back to him.

next time i’m bringing photos!

Ev`Yan || apricot tea. January 8, 2010 at 12:07 am

Yes! I’m a hairstylist. I don’t practice, only on myself & family… but I still have my license so technically, I’m a hairstylist. That’s a part of my life that I have yet to discuss, but probably need to.

DWJ January 7, 2010 at 8:05 pm

Awwww…you do not look like a mom! And you sound so worried! All you have to do is get up, wash it and style it your way and you’ll feel much better about it. I never like how they style it in the salon, so I just wait and give it my own little touch and feel much better. I’m confident that you’ll be able to rock this hair!

jennine January 7, 2010 at 8:58 pm

yeah, me either! why do they always give people ‘tv reporter’ hair in the salon? no one likes that in real life!
but yeah, i’m going to give it a go tomorrow to see if it works out differently.

L.A. Stylist Mom January 7, 2010 at 8:06 pm

OMG you are TOO cute!!! You’re like, “I don’t know, I imagined shoulder length hair to come down to like, here…?” as you point to your FREAKING SHOULDER! That IS where it comes down to in reality, and although it sucks that she listened to you zero? I think she actually may have done you a favor – LOVE IT. Love the long bangs “swooped” to the side (IMO, what keeps it from looking like “Mom” hair), and it looks bouncy, healthy and chic. Did I really just leave this long of a comment re: a stranger’s hair?? Hope you end up liking it…you look beautiful.

jennine January 7, 2010 at 9:02 pm

haha, maybe it’s a happy accident. i’m so confused about shoulder length though it’s not the first time i asked for shoulder length and got two inches above shoulder….

but yeah, it’s way healthier that that old mop i was wearing around.

Tami January 7, 2010 at 8:09 pm

Actually, it looks great. I could be wrong but now you have a sophisticated European vibe. :)
I think you’re not used to the idea of ‘short’ hair but now it gives you an excuse to try different accessories/clothes to show off the new neckline and hair!

Aw, sweetie! You sound so down in your video. I think you look fabulous, but if you don’t feel 100% then it’s not the cut for you. Like someone else said, I think you try to straighten the layers. You have great cheekbones – so you can definitely pull off different looks.

I agree with Glendy above – the cut is fine, but if you flat iron your hair and make the bottom zuzh out a bit with some product, you could make it look really edgy and hot! I’ve had similar length hair for a while after years of long hair, and know that the difference between mom hair and cool hair is in the styling. It’s the fact it curls under a bit in the vid that makes it look less striking than it could :)

jennine January 7, 2010 at 9:07 pm

yeah, the curls make it worse, way worse, i tried smoothing them out, but this will require a flat iron…

Imelda Matt January 7, 2010 at 8:23 pm

I’m so sorry that your trip to the salon didn’t go as expected! I really hate it when you feel like you haven’t been listened to at all and they kind of do their own thing. However, I honestly really, really like the new cut! It’s adorable and I think once you get used to it, you can still find some great ways to style it and feel comfortable with it. And I don’t think it’s mom hair at all! I’m sure there are some great photos out there to find some great inspiration :)

Alicia Thatcher January 7, 2010 at 8:33 pm

I have to echo the sentiment of styling making the difference! A flat iron will be your best friend with this cut, I think! Straighten it out at the ends and rub in a little product and I see a very chic ‘do shaping up – not “mom-hair” at all!

dreamsequins January 7, 2010 at 8:35 pm

On Tabitha’s Salon Makeover, Tabitha would tell your stylist to pack up their shears and go home.

In all seriousness, you have the bob of my dreams. It’s just the way they blew it out that makes it look like Mom Hair.

I had a similar event last Feb. I asked for a long A-line bob and ended up with super shorty bangs and a super short bob! EEEK!!! It has since grown out of that and I will probably get brave again and wack it off (but not as short!)

Check out Jessica @WhatIWore she rocks her bob.

Oh yeah and so not mom hair but I totally understand what you mean. I hate when my hair curls under… It looks like my mom in the late 80′s early 90′s total mom hair!!! AHHHHHH!!! :)

OK- I want to clarify my Tabitha comment above– I meant that your stylist should be fired for not listening to your instructions to make it shoulder length, not for the way your cut looks now. LOL. Now I’m being uber sensitive.

I think you can and SHOULD rock this bob thing, despite it being an accidental short cut. I have some really bad haircut stories that are too long to recount here, but they mostly involve people interpreting my cuts to mean Jennifer Aniston from Friends hair. Ew.

I have to agree with a lot of the above comments…flat iron flat iron. I cut about 6 inches off my hair last week and I WAS FREAKING OUT…but since then I have been trying different things (flat iron, bangs to the side, bangs down in the front, flower by my ear) and I’m really starting to love the versatility.
It looks really great on you!

It is very cute and you will find a way to style it your way. Also you can still pin it up in the back or pin one side back.
When I have had a bob, it seems my hair grows in so quickly. I think it is the clean lines that help, before you know it you will have shoulder length hair!

Mel January 7, 2010 at 11:01 pm

Amy C January 7, 2010 at 11:18 pm

Your video reminded me of my ten-year old, who got her hair cut this weekend. She thought she was getting a trim, and got a good three inches cut off. I think she looks lovely. She’s gotten used to it, and seems to like it. I’ve had similar experiences, and find it so interesting how great an impact our hair, or how we perceive our hair, has on us. As to your question — I think your hair looks great. It’s different from how your hair has been, but I think it’s very chic. Also, if you flat iron it, it will look super chic and modern. Also, it will grow!

jennine January 8, 2010 at 3:40 pm

oh my goodness.. he cut like 10 inches off! but yeah, it probably has more to do with a mental/reality image disrupt than anything else. i’m starting to like it, mostly because my hair was annoying and now it’s gone! :)

when i cut my hair short for the first time after years last summer i hade the same reaction – i thought i’d look like a teacher for latin and geography… but i got used to it and became to like it and now i love it – this is definitely no mom-hair! this is more statement than any “boring” long hair without cut

you will love it, i am sure!

Graham Hutson January 8, 2010 at 5:12 am

I’m guessing you might need a male perspective on this. I have witnessed at first hand the pain hairdressers can inflict when they get a little too enthusiastic with their haircuts – my own GF has arrived home sobbing before.

Now while this definitely can’t be described as shoulder length, it still looks good. It frames your features well and I think it can be nice to see a bit of shoulder anyway.

And look on the bright side – you’re not going to need another cut for a while!

http://www.openzedor.blogspot.com

jennine January 8, 2010 at 3:43 pm

ooh i like that! it’s the recession friendly cut!

Georgiejune January 8, 2010 at 5:14 am

We’ve all had haircuts we don’t like. It’s fierce and you can work it, girl! In the end it is hair and it’ll grow back. After cutting mine really short last year (after a bad breakup – never go to the salon after a bad breakup!) it’s taken forever to get long again. You’ve just got to play around and find styles that work for you. When I had hair that length I found doing it straight to be a lot of work. So I put some volume/curl product in and diffused it to give it body and a more carefree, less mom look. I played around with it a bit and found a cute way to pin back the front to keep it out of my face. Voila!

Longtime reader of your blog and finally got around to commenting…loves it! Keep up the good work. Make a vid of what you decide to do with your new hair!

Retro Chick January 8, 2010 at 5:29 am

I like it. But I’ve always loved a bob.

If you look at the Models hair in the last post you wrote on Norweigan Wood it’s actually a similar style.

I think you need to wash and style it yourself. I always hate my hair when I leave the hairdressers, they insist on putting straighteners on it and my hair is so fine all the bounce just disappears!

If you still don’t like it when you’ve styled it yourself, just remember, hair grows!

It’s only mom hair if you wear mom jeans. I think it looks really sharp. Take a straightener to it for a little more edge and it will grow out before you know it! Just think of it as a cleansing for your hair. Now, it’s nice and healthy and new :) Ah, the bright side…

A change is always good but I was loving the long her. It is a typical bob. I would it get something more fun, that’s just me since I’m cutting it, I’ll just do something unpredictable. Sometimes hairdressers are tricky, it is always best to show them a picture because otherwise they will do things wrong evn if they are good.

Sabrina January 8, 2010 at 7:36 am

LOL. your video is so cute. Your haircut is FAB. I love it on you. It frames your face nicely. I get like this everytime I go in for a cut. My stylist wants me to go even shorter. I suffer from round face syndrome. Even at 104 lbs. my face is round and I have always had it in my head that I can’t wear short hair. But apparnetly I can. I do have to admit that when I see a girl with sexy long hair, I get a bit jealous, but short hair is so much sassier!
