Today, Rocky and I went to Zara so he can get some new clothes. He hasn’t bought new clothes in a while, and a friend of ours wears quite a lot of Zara menswear, so we decided to go check it out. We selected some clothes, then proceeded to the men’s dressing room which was empty. So we went to the dressing room, and Rocky tried on his clothes. He normally likes me to be around so I can help him decide what to get, and give feedback on what fits and I usually do some encouraging to try on different things.
The only time we were approached by the sales men, was in the dressing room when he came up and told me, ‘You need to wait outside.’ which, taken aback, I complied. He also told a woman helping another man she had to leave. She ignored him, and stayed in the dressing room until they were finished. I told them, perhaps they should reconsider their policy, because I’ve never been told to leave the dressing room from any other store, and that it must be a common occurrence for women to help the men in their lives select clothes.
Annoyed, I went downstairs to have a look around. Since I went to the Zara opening last month, I’ve been wanting to check them out. As before, I saw a lot of cute things, but nothing that really moved me to try on, until I came across the peaked shoulder blazer, a blazer ‘inspired’ by Balmain. There was only “Larges” left, so I tried it on to see if I liked it, being skeptical as I thought it would only look good on someone super skinny, or with no boobs. I really loved it, and Rocky offered to get it for me, but it was just too big, so I went to find sales help, and spotted two ladies, putting clothes away and chatting.
Me: ‘Excuse me, do you work here?’
Sales lady 1: “Yes.”
Me: “Do you have these in any smaller sizes?”
Sales lady 2: “That’s all we have, it’s on the floor.”
Then they continue their conversation. I’m still standing there.
Me: “Do you think you’ll get any more in?”
Sales lady 1: “Yeah, maybe. We get shipments two times a week”
They continue their conversation.
Me: “Um, Excuse me, but when do the shipments come in?” I’m annoyed at this point.
Sales lady 1: “Monday and Thursday”
Me: “So should I call on Monday?”
Sales lady 1: “Maybe you should call on Tuesday.”
Me: “Thank you.”
I left the store with mixed feelings, I love the blazer, but seriously, I never wanted to set foot in a Zara store again. I might have chalked it up to jaded workers, but the Zara store on Michigan Avenue, opened less than a month ago. What’s more, is it felt like I had to resort to Guantanamo Bay torture techniques just to get any information about the clothes. The menswear sales people told me I had to leave the dressing room, but if I weren’t there helping Rocky with sizes and fits, he wouldn’t have bought anything, because not once, did they offer to help get another size, or to see how things were going.
As far as the ladies with the blazer. They acted like I should be so happy that they would even talk to me. Which is absolutely ridiculous, for any shop, much less Zara. It seems like these days when retailers, and designers are hurting more than ever, that there would be NO room for poor customer service. People talk about ‘saving fashion’ by shopping, but what exactly are we saving here?
I love the blazer, but is it worth it to buy from a retailer with poor customer service?
UPDATE: Many of you had kindly pointed out that this is a policy in many stores because of loss prevention. I did not know this at the time, and was not given an alternative to help Rocky select his clothes.
UPDATE 2: Because I was taken aback by this dressing room incident, I had completely forgotten about a top hat that I took a liking to. It was too big, and I had asked the dressing room clerk where the other hats were so I could find a smaller size. He just simply told me there was one on display, and one ‘somewhere else.’

Re: the fitting rooms. If you were actually IN the fitting room with him, I can see why they may have mentioned it. It’s a Loss Prevention issue to have 2 people inside a fitting room together (not to mention a sexual thing).
Re: the salesgirls. Whoa. Was it busy? I remember MANY times at UO, going out of my way to try and locate sizes at different stores, order it for the customer so it could be delivered to their house. Those girls were…. wow. I don’t have words for it.
.-= Ashe Mischief´s last blog ..IFB Presents: Links á la Mode =-.
yeah, i was in the fitting room, but there was just a curtain, so no sexy time. i’ve never been asked to leave a fitting room. but if it were that, i could stand outside the actual stall, because what was he going to do, go outside and parade around? that’s ridiculous. besides, where were they when i AND the other woman came in?
as for the sales girls, there is no excuse.
Oh, I totally agree. There should have been an attendant there in the first place to be like, “Only 1 person can go in the fitting room, but you can stand outside the door and talk to him.” And there’s REALLY no excuse for the salesgirls. That was total crap.

Hey girl,
the Zara one is great, but i LOVE my power shoulder blazer from Nasty Gal Vintage.com
i have the boyfriend fit velvet one but i think you would love these 2:
http://www.shopnastygal.com/products/new/clothing/Power-Shoulder-Tuxedo-Blazer.html'‘
and thise one
http://www.shopnastygal.com/products/new/clothing/Leather-Panel-Shoulder-Jacket.html
BOTH cheaper than 160
:]]
oh yeah, and she’s got quite a few others that look great as well… hmmm
I wouldn’t. I have walked away from amazing deals on items I coveted due to poor customer service without regret. I DO regret the one time I did compromise my principles and buy from a place who previously treated me terribly. I never even wore the item in part because it reminded me of the bad experience.
.-= jesspgh´s last blog ..Figuring out how to wear a slightly too long dress =-.
yeah, it kind of feels like blood money or something when you have to go through bad customer experience to get something… yikes.
They want to keep you out of the fitting room so you don’t try to have sex – or steal stuff. They kick men out of women’s change rooms too. And when S and I went shopping for M – they tried to prevent us from going in the change room together – with a kid! With Zara, I don’t think the clothing is worth the attitude. Next week they’ll be something just as good. And the service will be just as mediocre. The likelihood that the jacket will reappear is pretty slim, I reckon. (Not that you shouldn’t try. It’s just, when you call, you’re going to get more inept and crappy service. I can almost guarantee it.)
.-= K-Line´s last blog ..Fabrication =-.
hehe, that’s so funny family of thieves! but yeah, maybe next week they’ll have something else… we’ll see.
ay, I used to work there. (on your last post I was still working there, lol)
I actually left because of THAT! hahaha strangely enough, most employees even at the Puerto Rico store, were quite… careless with costumers. Something I cannnooottt staaand. Even when it’s not the “rule” they just wouldn’t care! It’s the weirdest thing, cause most pass a really hard interview that HAS TO DO with costumer service haha I believe that people in general just… stopped caring. Even in a local shop I got to, I used to even be asked to have coffee and now I’m lucky if they say hi!
Advice: always tell the manager what happened so they better their service. sometimes it feels like a waste of time, but not everyone acts the same when they’re in front of their manager hahaha so they may not even know that their employee’s service sucks!
.-= Fi Figueroa´s last blog ..I want you. I want you so bad…. =-.
ooh, i was about to tell the manager, but i didn’t want to seem like a tattle tale, though in retrospect, i’m sure Zara would rather me tell a manager, than all of you.
I vote no. There’s no excuse for poor customer service in an economy like this. Take your money to a store that wants it–and that cares enough about its customers to hire people who care about them.
.-= Marissa´s last blog ..brassfield: @PerezHilton Congrats, you’ll kick ass! =-.
yeah, that’s what i’m thinking… i’d rather buy from people who really want to sell, and there is no shortage of that.
ah, forgot to say, the fitting room rule thing, is for zara worldwide. and it is for loss prevention like ash said. There are lots of cases, where the person inside is asking the other one to change thir sizes and whatnot instead of an employee, but the people who actually go to steal are actually taking them more clothes so the employee looses count of what they had in the first place and then steal hahaha
If you go to the women’s fitting room, they’ll probably tell your boyfriend to leave as well, and for you to show him what you’re wearing you’d hate to come out [very embarrassingly] and show him. lol STILL DON’T KNOW WHY they have that policy.
.-= Fi Figueroa´s last blog ..I want you. I want you so bad…. =-.
oh my god, i had no idea! i hear about the ‘loss prevention’ thing, but don’t you think it should be shared with everyone, so non-sales people don’t take offense? it would never occur to me to do something like that.
but if this is the case, then, perhaps they need to look at the dressing room design. have an area outside the dressing stalls, but separate from the sales floor. many department stores have this, because going out on the sales floor half dressed, or in something you’re unsure about is not very fun.
“! i hear about the ‘loss prevention’ thing, but don’t you think it should be shared with everyone, so non-sales people don’t take offense? it”
They SHOULD have told you that. I know that I often said, “I’m sorry, you can’t go in there, it’s a company policy against Loss Prevention…” and people would always joke, “But I won’t steal anything!” and I go, “I know, but again, it’s company policy…” They tend to be a lot more respectful when you’re transparent about it! (Funny, there’s that word again

whew! thank god, i thought it was just my imagination, or cluelessness!
I have seen this before too, but I give such snobby looks that they wouldn’t dare try that crap attitude with me. LOL!
Seriously though, if you like it then get it bc Zara pieces have this unique attribute to them that, even though they are not of the “best” quality, some of their pieces are just plain ferosh. Eff those hookers and get the blazer!

Fair enough with the fitting room thing (though they could have just let you wait outside, whilst observing, it’s a well known fact that girlfriends like to be involved in the whole process) but those two assistants were just plain rude. They should have willingly given their time, and even offered to look around the store for an alternative (a nice Zara assistant did this once). I’m sure the store will get wind of this, but maybe you just went in on a bad day, with the two worst people working? Maybe contact the store and express your disappointment, and they should be more than willing to help you find an alternative.

I would probably try to work it out, and maybe i will if i can’t get that blazer out of my head!
That’s such a joke – on both counts. Unfortunately bad customers service is so rife these days. Not at all fashion sphere specific, but I was recently in a supermarket at about 7am, I was the only customer at the checkouts, there were 2 staffed checkouts opened, I placed me few items on one of the girls checkouts who didn’t even speak, just looked at me and pointed to the self-checkout machine! Needless to say a few words were exchanged and she decided that she was indeed able to serve me my items. It’s unbelievable the attitude you can get when you are trying to hand over some of your hard earned dosh – maybe it the Zara girls worked on commission they’d show a little more customer care?
oh don’t get me started with stores outside the fashion sphere…well, that’s why i have my groceries delivered!

but you’re right about commission and sales, people do give it the extra push when extra $$ is involved….
hehe I never usually comment, but bad customer service is a pet peeve. I don’t care how much I love something, if they treat me bad I walk.
When everyone starts doing this, maybe the stores might actually take notice. Either way I am not going to give any of my money to some place that did not earn it
Branches of Zara in the UK are pretty much all that like. Or the ones I have been to are. Being supremely unhelpful to customers seems to be some kind of company policy. That and never having any proper sizes left. This is why I have never yet bought anything from Zara. My boyfriend has been put off as well.
http://www.magpiemagpiemagpie.blogspot.com
So tricky. There’s nothing in this world that makes me more angry than poor customer service. I’d probably buy the blazer anyway, and write a (slightly passive aggressive complaint e-mail to the website).

My advice is to complain to the manager. Managers are also so mortified if they get complaints and it’s the only way sassy young staff will ever learn. Although I usually point out the bad staff and bad service but I will always (if true) praise any good service at the same time. If you like the blazer, buy it. One person not buying an article of popular clothing is not going to affect them in the slightest. And you miss out on the jacket of your dreams!

That is such a frustrating situation. Have retailers learned nothing from the United Airlines incident? I still find myself humming the United Breaks Guitars song occasionally. (My inner nerd can’t help it.) If you haven’t heard it…check it out on Youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo
So Jennine–kudos for bringing it to our attention! In this environment of trying to “save fashion” each of us is voting for who remains in the industry–each time we open our wallets. It’s good to have this kind of information before we make these important purchases.
.-= Piper´s last blog ..Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show =-.
oooh yeah, i know that song! it’s catchy! well, i don’t know if this is quite like that, i just was so annoyed when i left. but it’s interesting to see retailers complaining that no one is buying, then seeing sales people who act that way.
Oh god there is nothing worse than bad customer service at a clothing store. It infuriates me – like they think you’re not good enough to wear their clothes. And knowing you, you probably had an awesome outfit on while all of this went on.
.-= Rawbean´s last blog ..It’s Over! Finally… =-.
That blazer is dirt cheap for a decent jacket. Maybe in addition to using cheap manufacturing labor and cheap materials, Zara uses cheaply bought salespeople. I guess it’s a case of you get what you pay for
.-= WendyB´s last blog ..Thank You! =-.
so true, that’s what i was thinking.
I would rather troll the vintage or thrift stores and find something equally amazing and pay a fraction of the price and not have to deal with snotty salespeople. As someone who worked in a men’s department in a clothing store, guys don’t need women in the dressing room to have sex. Yeah, it’s rather bad.
As for those sales clerks, they should be fired. Sadly most of them do it because their supervisors do it to.
As for the jacket, if the look is popular enough, it will start showing up in other stores. Hopefully ones with better staff.
.-= Julie H.´s last blog ..It’s that time again =-.
oooh yeah, i’ve heard about that!
julie, i pretty much think it will start showing up in other shops…
It’s the way that they work, here in Spain is the same.
Basically they don’t have an exclusive costumer service and the personal is there mostly to maintain the clothes in order also if you want something you should find one of the Zara’s girls and ask for what you want (and yes, probably the response that are gonna give you is the same as you describe)
The “wait outside of the fitting room” is a security policy, some of the stores respectthis and some others don’t but again, is the way that they work.
Another thing that I think is that not everyone serve well in that job, whether in zara or any other store.
In this case, the consumer of Zara knows that things work this way, maybe you get lucky and someone more predisposed attend you.
So if you go to Zara is for the clothes not for customer service, the costumer knows this (or learns itget used) and accepts it this way.
Besos!

hey love…well i wasn’t expecting them to roll out the red carpet… i don’t expect that at any fast fashion store, but i did expect a certain level of, well basic politeness. and the clothes aren’t good enough for me to put up with rudeness.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. I hate it when any store has poor customer service and you are right, in these economic times, they should be trying to sell. I hate it when salespeople rely on what they think is the fact that they will rack up sales anyway so they don’t have to really service a customer. I’m also at the point where if I receive poor service, I no longer visit the store and that is no matter how much I love the clothing there.
.-= Sheena´s last blog ..Inspiring Friends =-.
exactly, there’s no excuse in these times…but again, there are so many other places too! so we’ll see…
Too bad Zara doesn’t have an online store.

.-= Petite Cecile´s last blog ..Sartorial-ize You! =-.
Ick, so sorry you had such an unpleasant customer service experience. I used to work in retail and whenever a customer needed help, no matter what I was doing, that was the first priority. If you’re pricing things or putting things away–well, you can always attend to that when people don’t need help and things are quiet, no? I agree with the other commenters who suggested complaining to the manager.
.-= lisa´s last blog ..Two of Hearts Sample Sale =-.
I worked for Zara for a good bit and unfortunately that is how things are. Not that they couldn’t have offered to do more (they could have!), but the company does not have an online ordering system, does not do chargesends, and carries limited stock of hot pieces in stores. The main selling point is that unlike other stores, what you see is typically what you get and there is no guarantee that there will be more of any specific item once it’s gone.
I think it also has to do with the fact that it is an international brand, and the customer service policies may come from Europe. I’m not sure what Spanish shoppers expect in terms of customer service?
I’ve been in touch with my old boss and coworkers about that specific jacket, and it seems that they have been regularly restocking it and reissuing new but similar versions (with slight differences like buttons or sleeve detailing). Maybe you can see if a different, friendlier Zara near you has any kind of waitlist (my store did). One of the NYC stores has enough inventory to be its own warehouse, too.
ooh that’s good to know, it must be hard to manage a company on such an international level, particularly with the cultures varying so wildly. bad customer service in europe is one thing… it’s kind of the culture there, but in the states, it’s just insensitive and pretty offensive. then again, americans have a whole slew of intersting quirks around shopping and money.
that had to be a really frustrating experience. i can no longer relate! let me explain:
i must admit- you will think i’m crazy, but- i have, by necessity, had to decrease my standards to such a low degree, that your experience would not bother me in the slightest. in fact, it would actually be normal where i’ve lived for 12 years (we have almost NO customer service here on my little island. hard to even find a salesperson sometimes! and i’m not talking about clothes shopping- there’s none of that around- but simply a local eatery or gift shop, for example). so when i travel to the US and go shopping, i am amazed at how “great” the service is, like, everywhere! funny and a bit sad, isn’t it?! lol, i’m just satisfied to find a salesperson with a pulse.
anyway….so sorry, but i’m having major shopping withdrawals (it’s been many months and counting-longer than usual), and then happened to check your blog.
all that aside, the jacket does look marvelous! very balmain-esque. in the “real world”, would i make the further effort to get this jacket after your experience? actually, probably not! especially since there are so many other places where one could probably find a similar style, and with better service.
love your blog, by the way! don’t know why i didn’t see it on lookbook.nu before. *duh*

I was going to suggest you order the blazer and bypass the rotten service, but I see from the comments that that isn’t an option. I am also an advocate of a nicely written “bad news” letter to the shop’s manager, in which you explain your complaint politely . . .
.-= Miss Cavendish´s last blog ..Fingertip Length: The New Chic? =-.
During one of my semester breaks, I worked for Zara, and finally then I realised why their customer service is so bad. The people that work there are only paid half their salary fixed, the rest of their working hours are paid per hour. That means when they work there a hundred percent, only 50 % of their social insurances are paid. In addition, they constantly try to maximise their profits by being understaffed. I used to buy now and then clothes there, but after I saw how they treat their employees I seriouseley try to avoid Zara. I have to admit that I bought a white longish blazer there this year. But the quality of the products do not encourage further purchase anyhow. So, hope you can make up your mind now. The scandinavian brand TOFU has many nice blazers that are a bit more expensive, but really much more worth their money. They may also have one with peaked shoulders…
That is so random about the changing rooms! especially since Zara have this changing room set up where there’s a sofa in the middle for the non-shoppers to sit on, which actually encourages people to come in! Plus I’ve had loads of people in my actual changing rooms, including my boyfriend.
The sales assistants’ behaviour is unacceptable though! I would be inclined not to go back, but then I never love a particular item of clothing *that much*. Oh, and it’s not a Europe thing at all (as Jinah suggests). I regularly go to Zaras in the UK, Luxembourg and Germany, and have never experienced anything like that. They do usually seem understaffed and slightly stressed out though, but it doesn’t sound like that is the problem here!

NOT WORTH IT (sorry for shouting, long time reader, first time commenter here). I’ve recently had increasingly shitty service at a local Zara location which I now refuse to step foot in. The incident that put the nail in the coffin for me? I had half an hour to kill before dinner, so I stepped in to Zara to do some shopping. I found 2 items–a blouse and a dress–that I was ready to buy, but didn’t want to carry with me to my dinner date. So I asked to put the items on hold until tomorrow. I went back the next day only for them to tell me that there was no such hold. I repeated my info to them, described the items on hold and even described the associate who helped me yesterday. No, no dice. Another woman shows up and tells me that there’s nothing. I ask if maybe the items got mistakenly put back on the racks? The lady informs me, no, that would “never happen”, I must have somehow forgotten that I did not put a hold on it! Well fine then, I told her, what if she could locate the items out on the racks for me, and THEN I would purchase them. She reluctantly does so and lo, and behold! The very same items! And just in my size, too!
So I smile, didn’t want to be a bitch, and thank her for locating it. I’d like to pay for them now, please.
Sure, she says. And then she points me to the back of the now long line-up.
Really? I ask her. I just spent half an hour here while you guys lost my items.
She replies, Well if you really put your stuff on hold, we would never have put it back out. !!!!
Ok, the gloves are fuckin’ off. I ask to speak to a manager.
Oh, but I am the manager.
This is when I left without buying anything and I’ve never stepped foot in it since (thank god there’s another Zara elsewhere in the city).
GIRL, IT IS NOT WORTH THE GRIEF.
Whoever suggested NastyGal was right. Their stuff is cuter and the service is better

holy mackrel, i would be FURIOUS. seriously, there is no excuse for the manager to treat you like that. honestly, i was going to talk to the manager, but if they hired the workers, chances are the manager would be just as incompetent. the point in which you make in your comment. unbelievable. if anything, they should have retrieved your items regardless.
Here in Spain we have a lot of Zara stores (of course), and it’s a pity to say our first low-cost brand has a so bad customer care service.
Regarding the “fitting room rule”, I can understand because we have that rule at most of the shops in Spain and we don’t mind to go out the fitting room and showing the clothes (maybe a culture matter?). The problem is not informing about the rule, I think. I think we all could understand it if we were explained about the robberies, “affaires”, and so on…
But what has no excuse is Zara shop staff attitude… That’s the reason I try to void Zara as much as possible. I don’t want to meet lazy or arrogant clerks… This haughty attitude seems to be spread world wide. The only place I felt some interests from sellers was at Zara Shibuya, in Tokyo.
There is a Zara store in Estonia too and i have shopped there a couple of times. I haven’t had a bad service experience and i haven’t been kicked out of the dressing room. ( maybe that’s because i have always been there with a female person. ) Maybe it’s just the way estonian people are.
About the question should you buy it. I think you can find blazer like that in other shops – where are better service – too. But yeah, these girls are not worth working in a place like that. They shouldn’t work in places where you have to communicate with other people. And im really sorry you had this kind of experience with Zara, because this shop is actually really good and has some really nice clothes.
That just wouldn’t fly in NY! I’m disgusted.

Wow what a lousy experience, so shocking as you guys in US are renowned for your exemplary customer service. Well you like the jacket so I would see if you can get hold of it. Don’t let those idiots at Zara put you off, however, I would write a letter of complaint to the manager.

Oi. I have seen SO. MUCH. BAD. SERVICE. lately. All over the retail spectrum — even at Ross Dress for Less, of all places. I don’t need help with much, but I absolutely draw the line at rude salespeople. If you talk to a manager and don’t see results, then the only way to show that you care about the service is to hit ‘em where it hurts: the sales. In instances like these, my friends and I not only leave my intended purchases behind, but also tell one another about the poor experience. The way I see it, these days, another person — a hard worker with a great attitude — is probably out of a job somewhere, needing the cash. Outing a bad employee is one step toward employing a great employee!
Oh, EYE wouldn’t be buying anything from there. I probably wouldn’t shop at Zara at all if they upset me enough.
Back when I worked retail, customer service was PARAMOUNT. We were more consultants than sales people and were expected to bring our clients sizing options and check in with them constantly. To hear that people are acting like this (especially when retail is suffering) is just jarring.
OOOOH, I’m mad just thinking about that situation if I were in your shoes…
Sounds like you were shopping in germany… a good customservice is hard to find in stores like zara and H&M. I have to buy clothes there if I am working on movie, but I almost never(!) ask anyone anything, because I get a nervousbreakdown hearing the answer :”only whats on the floor”

There is a new Zara opening up at State and Randolph (either Wednesday or Friday they told me). Maybe you could try them and see if the service is better.
I’m a tiny bit late on commenting on this and wasn’t going to comment because you have many great suggestions and opinions–some repeatedly said, but…I can’t help myself.
Forget about “company policy”, what happened to basic human kindness?
both the customer and employee and, uh, not to mention everyone who interacts with anyone– should give respect. call me “old fashioned” but should politeness ever really go out of style?

I think it’s not so much about the company, more about the specific store. I live in Spain (Zara is a Spanish brand) and my local shop is full of helpful, lovely employees. However, when I used to study in Granada (also in Spain), the local staff was awful. The thing is that people from my city are known to be friendly, whilst people from Granada are notorious for their sour ways! I think its more to do with a certain shop than a general company attitude
