Wearing Special Things for No Particular Reason

by jennine on November 12, 2009

grey dress

I’m wearing my wedding dress today for no particular reason. I stood there at my closet thinking to myself that I had absolutely no clothes. I had failed.

Either…I’m not a good bride, or what ever reason you can fill in here _________ . Today,  I just decided to wear my wedding dress by Jennifer Gilpin. It seemed to be the most logical thing, pale grey, soft fabric, comfortable, and easily goes with a million things in my empty closet. Fair enough, this dress is pretty, but it can be dressed down….but what about all those pretty dresses in my closet that never see the light of day? Blue sequins, red chiffon, pretty ruffles with beading, silk flutters. They’re there, they probably make me feel pretty when I wear them, so why not wear them more often?

Sure, people might stare, they might ask, ‘Where are  you going?’ ‘What’s the occasion?’ they might say things like ‘Trying too hard.’ Like, if we’re not trying too hard, we’re not trying enough. But the special things in my closet, they need to come out, otherwise they become precious.

Dress: Jennifer Gilpin • Caridgan : Thrifted • Leggings: Topshop • Boots: Aldo • Cuff: Market Publique

OMG, that is a FABULOUS outfit! Are you serious? That was your wedding dress? You go, girl. I love that! Ok, so where are the leggings from? I’m desperately searching everywhere for cute printed leggings & I can’t seem to find any that I think are cute. I like those, though. I love the boots, too. Did you feature those on your blog recently? They look familiar. Anyway, cute look. ;)

That’s how I feel about my shoes too. What I like to say is “You are the Special Occassion”. Come to think of of it.. I need to get my Philosophy of Closets series going…

I vote wear special things when you want, for whatever reason you can (or cannot) come up with! Too many items are saved for “best.”

I love that you’re wearing your wedding dress. It’s my goal, if I ever get married, to make everything I wear on that day something that can convert to regular wear. Not only is it financially impractical otherwise, but it makes you feel more special to think, “I wore this on one of the best days of my life!” It’s like a superheroes cape–something that only you know how special it is, and can erase anything bad from that day.

I agree with your post. Bring out the special occasion dresses and wear them on a non special occasion just because you love them. Oh and your leggings are my favorite! I may have to steal the idea and paint some roses on a pair of my own.

J, that dress is gorgeous. You look gorgeous.

I’m jacking WendyB’s line, wear what you want!!! Screw what other people think. If you love it, wear it. You don’t need an occasion.

What a lovely dress – I love the pale shade of grey, so beautiful. I designed my wedding dress which two pieces – I swapped a fitted cap sleeved jacket out with a strapless corset bodice for different parts of the night (hard to explain). But anyway, I wanted to have the jacket made specifically so I could wear it again on another occasion – such as an anniversary or holiday party. I think it is important to have special pieces of clothing in your wardrobe and wear them every once in awhile. Even if it’s a regular old Thursday!

I honestly wear special things for no particular reason almost all the time. Perhaps because I have a habit of buying special things all the time – can’t have a closet full of things that I can only wear to weddings and parties and such! And I love that you can wear your wedding dress. My wedding dress is green, so I can wear it and not look like a bride, but it’s still pretty fancy, like high tea fancy. But it’ll at least get more than one wear.

Absolutely stunning! I love that you went with a untraditional wedding dress, and that you aren’t afraid to get more than one use from it! This look is soft and doesn’t come off as super dressed up at all to me.

And I love your little bit about wearing those special items so that they don’t become too precious and untouchable. Motivation to keep dressing up for school and to believe in my outfits more!

Spread peace and happiness.

This is my newest favorite look! I love the hair up, and the outfit is so flattering. It looks sophisticated yet comfortable and accessible, totally a style I would wear.

Best of all, it has such sentimental value for you, I’m with Ashe on the whole secret superhero cape concept. I would so love to wear my wedding dress again, but where can you realistically wear a Reem Acra ball gown? Not the E train.

By the way, love the lipstick color, whose is it?

I am, to my core, a rather ‘cheap’ person and the idea of buying something for several hundred, or indeed thousands, of dollars to be worn only once freaks me out. So to see that someone is brave enough to make use of theirs more than once is an inspiration to me! Plus the outfit looks fab!

I am wondering how some other outfits involving wedding dresses might look, but your wedding dress just happens to be a beautiful, amazing little number that is sophisticated and lacking all the cliches of a traditional dress, so the outfit is amazing. I really like this idea though, pulling out “special” pieces and giving them a whirl. If they are so special how come they get worn the least?

Here in Seattle, there is no wearing of dresses without questions about the special occasion. It’s slowly changing, but not quickly enough for me.

You look lovely–I have a good friend who was married in a very informal setting who loves being able to wear her wedding clothes whenever.
