LadyLUX, you have hit the nail on the head! I think it's very important for designers, brands and retailers to join the conversation and enable social tools instead of inhibiting them. At any rate, people will talk about you, whether or not you are participating. So it's up to you to direct the mood, tone and resolve whatever issues there may be (we wrote about it here: http://fashionablymarketing.me/2009/09/fashion-industry-adopting-social-media). I would caution against over-directing - it's more influential when people are having a good experience with your product or brand and blogging / tweeting about it vs. the brand itself broadcasting its message. So focus on keeping the information flowing, enabling the channels, listening and responding to the good and the bad. You can't stop social sharing, so be a part of it!

I get really happy when designers and other fashion industry people and entities embrace social media. This is in stark contrast to Toronto Fashion Week banning all social media (forget about streaming, you can't even tweet!) - bad decision - bad for marketing, awareness building, community, all of it! This way you can actually have more control of and help shape conversation that's happening around you and about you.

I agree that this may be the way of the future of fashion! Opening up runway shows through shared video is certainly a way to increase visibility and brand awarenss (not that they need it) but it will open a channel that has previously been sealed tight! Dolce and Gabbanna often stream their show as well!
