Father’s Day Gift Guide

Sonja and Her Dad

I love my dad dearly. I’m lucky to have him (yes, that’s him and me in these photos). He’s a kind, generous, funny man who loves to play guitar (and collect them – he never met a yard sale he didn’t like) and never passes up the opportunity to tell a corny joke (apparently, he passed this characteristic on to me – much to my sister’s chagrin). He taught me so many things – from how to ride a bike to how to program computers (yes, we’re a nerdy bunch). He’s always been there for me and helped guide me – even through those obnoxious teen years.

For Father’s Day (this Sunday, June 21st, which is also the first day of summer!), I would love to take him out for a wonderful meal or cook him a special meal myself; but we’re about 1500 miles apart (he’s in St. Louis, I’m in San Francisco) so instead we’ll have a chat on the phone (perhaps we’ll get fancy this year and do a video call over Skype). And I’ll send him some tokens of my love – something homemade and a store-bought treat. Today I’m sharing some gift ideas, in case you’re also in the market for a Father’s Day gift.

For Dads Who Like to Smell Good and Be Kind to the Environment

Nautica OceansMy dad has always appreciated a good bottle of cologne. I’m sure he’d be even more impressed with one that’s environmentally friendly. New Nautica Oceans is just that. It’s a fresh, clean scent that has a biodegradable, water-based formula (vs. a traditional, alcohol-based formula) and impressive staying power. Sales also support Oceana, a conservation organization that works to protect the world’s oceans. Nautica Oceans is a lovely blend of things like lemon tonic, sea salt rose, lavender reef, geranium, amber crystals, and teak – evocative of sailing the high seas on a lazy, summer afternoon.

The line includes Water Pure Eau de Toilette sprays ($49 – $65), After Shave Balm ($38), and Deodorant Stick ($16). Available at a variety of department stores, like Macy’s, and online shops like nautica.com and amazon.com. Gift sets are also available right now.

For Dads in Need of a Skin Care Tuneup and Dads Who Love to Travel

Does your dad use something like Irish Spring on his face? Oh, the thought of it gives me the heebie jeebies. Sometimes men need a little help with their skin care. Steer Dad in the right direction with a travel kit with excellent skin care. He can sample the good stuff and see what he likes; and you won’t have to break the bank. Here are a couple choices I highly recommend.

Burt’s Bees Natural Skin Care for Men
Burt's Bees Natural Men's Skin Care SetI really like Burt’s Bees’ Natural Skin Care for Men line with its refreshing, subtle, natural scent and how it’s made with a blend of essential oils. There are a variety of travel sets with products from this line with goodies like body wash, aftershave, shave cream, and bar soap. You can get these directly from Burt’s Bees. Drugstore.com also carries a couple great kits from this line ($13.99-$25.99).

By the way, Burt’s Bees is celebrating “25 Years for the Greater Good.” Be sure to check out their site where they’ve been giving away 25,000 lip balms – 1,000 every day through June 20th – and having other cool giveaways.

Kiehl’s
Kiehl's Mens Travel KitKiehl’s just introduced three new gift assortments for men with skin care products that are longtime favorites – things like Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream, Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash, and Ultimate Man Body Scrub Soap. They’re also great deals, like the Men’s Travel Kit, which is a $36.50 value for $24.50. The Men’s Travel Kit ($24.50) and Energizing Starter Kit ($28.50) both come with EVA travel bags. Available at kiehls.com and a variety of freestanding stores (click here for their store locator).

Jack Black
Jack Black On-the-Road SetJack Black is another excellent line with brilliant skin care for men. They have several gift sets available that are very good values. The On-The-Road Travel Pack is a set of six best-sellers in a black, hanging, micro-fiber bag. It’s an $80 value for $58 and includes a shaving cream/skin conditioner, all-over wash, face moisturizer/treatment with SPF 20, face scrub, hand healer, and their fabulous Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 with Natural Mint and Shea Butter. This set and others are available at getjackblack.com and Sephora, where you can get 14 men’s skin care and scent samples with any purchase at Sephora.com through the end of June or while supplies last (use code ALLHIS).

Or Have Him Pick Whatever He Wants

Of course, you may have no idea what Dad wants so a gift card is a good option. If you want to go this route, I recommend getting him one from amazon.com. It’s amazing the selection they offer these days – everything from electronics and fishing poles to skin care and shoes. It’s highly likely he’ll be able to find something loves.

Hope these ideas are helpful and you have fun celebrating Father’s Day with dear ol’ dad.

Do Tell

What’s your dad like? What are you doing for Father’s Day? Getting him a gift? Taking him out for a nice meal? Going fishing together? Do tell.

What fantastic ideas! Thanks so much…I have been thinking about what to do for my husband and for my step-dad for Father’s Day. Great thoughts….and I especially like the Burt Bees and the Nautica Oceans! I love all natural products and am trying to make the switch on everything in our home. Our son has suffered from severe allergies and Eczema for the first three yrs of his life- and now he is so much better since starting on the kids chewable probiotic from Vidazorb! He is like a whole new kid! We have changed as a family due to this condition with him and now have such a great desire for only natural products…eliminating chemicals and synthetics! SO…will be checking into one of these for Father’s Day (and Burt Bees for bug repellent).

    Great suggestions, Jennine!

My dad is a guitar player, too, so I got him John Hiatt and Warren Zevon songbooks, per his request. He also asked for a songbook of Randy Plackard songs … Randy is an imaginary person that Dad refers to a lot. I’m thinking of Photoshopping up a cover and pasting it to some random songbook … “The Lost Songs of Randy Plackard.”

hehe, i got my dad a book from amazon! my step dad always likes stuff from home depot… as long as i don’t get either of them ties, they’re happy.

My Dad gets crafty-homemade items now – oh and Amazon gift certificates he likes ’cause he can get what he wants and is always on the computer.

This year he’s getting a picture frame that I made with a photo of my sisters and I back in the early 80s –> can you say permed hair and high waisted pants? LOL

I think the Burts Bees & Jack Black gift packs are cool!

This year, me and my sister clubbed together and got hima DVD box set of the 3 original Indiana Jones films. It’s one of those that he always watched when it’s on the TV, and we have rubbish videos, so we thought we’d get him the quality DVD that he could play over again. I know he’s got it already, but we know he will appreciate it.
