As a child, I always loved flipping through the pages of fairy books like Brian Froud’s Faeries and World of the Dark Crystal as well as  Will Huygen’s Gnomes, I guess the 70’s/early 80’s were a good time for dark fantasy illustrations for children. London based Rachel Friere not only creates clothing, but a mythical narriative that surrounds her collections. Avant garde/steam punk/costumes transport your imagination to another place and another time where perhaps it is possible to live amongst fairies and…

Ok, my imagination has runaway, now I’ve exposed a whole new level of nerdiness… Let’s return to fashion, this collection is totally appropriate for the real (fairyless) world, corseted knickerbockers, leather ruffled boleros… CAGE LEGGINGS!!! Oh my…

{cage leggings! i’m almost surprised we haven’t seen them before! in that outfit though i’m perhaps more excited about the leather (?) ruffled bolero and the magnificent eyebrows…}

these pics remind me of a production of Midsummer Night’s Dream i saw as a child…

i was a fantasy nerd when i was younger, too – there wasn’t any harry potter back then, you know?

the funny thing is, those kind of “dark fantasy” kids movies can’t be made today because they changed the requirements for PG13 ratings in the USA in the 90’s and films like The Dark Crystal, Goonies, Willow and Gremilns would not receive this rating now and it’s box office death for kids films. Funny, huh?

So whimsical. This is really the artistic side of fashion – I envision a tale of some dark temptress kicking ass. I like interpreting fashion too, don’t stop yourself from letting your imagination run free!
