Vintage Nylons in Paris

by jennine on February 3, 2009

For someone who hates to wear nylons, I’ve been thinking a lot, and I do mean a lot lately. Gosh, it’s been a while since I’ve worn them, because if it’s warm enough to go with nylons, it’s warm enough to go bare-legged. However there is something about the sheer flesh tone of nylons that really inspire me, and vintage nylons? Simply gorgeous. Vintage nylons are different from their modern counterparts, they have a pre-determined leg shape, a thin, thin smooth texture, they need a sexy garter. I mean, how grandma can you feel wearing a garter?

Over the weekend in Paris, I went to this flea market called Les Puces de Montreuil suggested by Matières à réflexion and I found all kinds of lovely vintage there, including this lot of vintage stockings at the Irma (Jilles and Fabian) near the entrance of the market. They had so many old French (of course) stockings from the 60′s through the 80′s all in the original packaging. For a graphic designer, and vintage lover, it was heaven.

I’m probably going to frame these.

The sexiest thing about these vintage stockings is the packaging! Sadly, once you put them on they are just nylons! If only we could wear the packaging!

Yes! I’d love to wear the packaging! ;)
Though I just may frame them somehow.

Ohh my god, I MUST go to this flea market! I’ll be in Paris for valentines… I’ll have to drag the family there.

Sal February 3, 2009 at 9:21 am

You should frame them. Don’t know why I never think to go to Les Puces de Montreuil… I tagged you today, you can choose your award.

I have two tiny boxes of vintage nylons that are so pretty that I’m afraid to wear them! So I bought a pair of vintage looking stockings at H&M a few weeks ago–they’re sheer in a pretty color and they even have the seams up the back!

The photos with the lace look gorgeous, now I’m wishing for nude-toned lace tights.
Any idea where to find some?

Makes me think of war movies, where cigarettes, nylon and chocolate are as good as money.

I am not a fan of nylons, I would rather go bare legged.. but then the whole colored tights revolution popped up and I am a converter.. but flesh covered ones… just not for me.
I have to agree with the comment above the packaging is pretty awesome.

Thanks for your post on my blog. I have to work on my picture stance ..I will try the daylight thing for sure. I may have to invest in a tripod.

Thanks so much!

A couple months ago I had the same thought about nude stockings. I came across a handmade stocking holder/case at a thrift store. It’s a nude satin, embroidered with dainty little rose buds. I thought it was adorable and loved it even more when I found out that the nude, sheer stockings that were inside came with as well! I love it dearly and haven’t had a chance to wear such a sheer stocking yet but can’t wait for it to warm up…just a bit. Thrift stores and garage sales are amazing spots to pick up some vintage hosiery. Love it!

I love vintage nylons…tights or stockings it doesn’t matter! Whenever I come across a pair in a charity shop, car boot sale or market I snap ‘em up double quick. You can get some really fab & unique ones and usually they are cheap as chips too :)

Sandra February 3, 2009 at 7:16 pm

I always pick up vintage nylons when I can buy them. I have a box of Mr. John stockings in my shop that I know will make me sad if and when they sell.

missmilki February 4, 2009 at 4:08 am

Those are lovely – its funny I have some mental block against flesh coloured stockings/tights too, even though I wear opaque and coloured tights all the time. I love vintage stockings though and some day I’m going to buy suspenders and be all ladylike.

❤lisa marie…what a nice find!
❤calamityjem…wow, that’s a great idea, i guess if it’s not deadstock, i’m afraid to buy it…but it seems liek there’s alot around
❤sandra…honestly, i don’t know how you part with some things in your shop!
❤missmilki…yeah, there is something freaky about pantyhose, but the sheer sillouette is so pretty, i wish that would translate on my legs somehow.

I live in tights. Mostly black. But these ones are lush. Maybe I should expand my efforts…x

Those packages are absolutely great!

But i loathe nude nylons, they remind me of Beyonce, and That in my book is never good thing.

erik February 12, 2009 at 12:52 pm

good to see the generel interest in vintage stockings.
I wish that more women would have the same inters

Renata February 17, 2009 at 6:31 pm

I love those vintage nylons with a sewing behind the leg. It’s so sexy!

jensen February 19, 2009 at 4:19 am

Wow, I should visit the mentioned market! I realy like the vintage-style packing and of course also the Nylons ;-)
By the way, on ebay you pay a lot of money for original Nylons like these….

Gut!

Reighn July 14, 2009 at 11:32 pm

I love the looks of nylon stockings even while there still in the package they are even sexy as there being taken out of the package and of course they look ever so enticing as the tops are stretched and hooked into the garters.

Unbelievable!
Why I found this post sooo late?
Because I´m a big Fan and collector of real Nylons from the 60ies.
I should book a flight as soon as possible.
Paris: I´m on the way………….
..hope this market still exist.
