At Last….Barack Obama is Officially our 44th President

I worked from home today, mostly because I wanted/needed constant stream of inaugural pomp and circumstance. Plus, I knew I’d get all weepy. And cry I did — big old tears of joy and hope. What an amazing moment in history. Hell yes we can!

Okay, I know the internet is, like, over-the-top orgasmically abuzz with inauguration day dispatches. In the spirit of gushing (and just a little snarking)here are my observations and favorite moments:

  • The enormity of it all. First, Obama is sworn in the day after Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Second, seeing the crowds (of millions!) in D.C. cheering and waiting to catch a glimpse of the Obamas.
  • First Lady Michelle Obama’s yellow brocade inaugural ensemble by Isabel Toledo — loved it! So did Coquette.
  • Sasha and Malia Obama — beyond cute. They looked so poised and refreshingly age-appropriate in their bright, belted Crewcuts coats.
  • The Rev. Joseph Lowery’s moving benediction, in which he prayed for an “end to exploitation of the weak and poor.” 87-year-old Lowery was a big part of the civil rights movement.
  • Aretha Franklin belts “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and rocks a hat with a ginormous sparkly bow. I thought it was fantastic — the Black Snob isn’t so sure.
  • Barry gives a shout out to the non-believers in his inaugural address. He said, “We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers.” That got my attention. How cool that he acknowledged non-believers. That almost makes up for Rev. Rick Warren.
  • The President and his First Lady slow dance to Beyonce crooning “At Last.” Beyonce killed it. Our first couple radiate love, respect and appreciation, don’t they?. Watch the video.

Even if I’m French I was moved because it was such an historical moment. I read French wondering comments about Michelle Obama’s outfit but I think she looked great. God bless America and your new president!

I have strange feelings about Beyonce singing “At Last.” I can’t quite figure out how I feel about it…

I’m Canadian and live in the UK. I had tears in my eyes watching him deliver his speech. It’s almost like a dream, I can’t believe how the country has transformed almost overnight – what happens in the US affects Canadians greatly, as it does the rest of the world. Sentiments are echoed here as well.

So happy!!

Congratulations!! i stayed up last night like the rest of the world whatching this historic moment, i may not be american but i felt national pride just the same “human pride” that such an event was happening and i lived to see it :) )) the obamas all looked great! (as for the fashion folk i am proud of michelle’s “fashion politics”, choosing J crew(gloves, daughters coats) is smart !) .. i hope Obama will proove to be one of america’s great presidents, he has my backing .. for now ;)
happy optimism … praying that he will be a positive force in change around the world :D
