Barbie is a Hitchcock Blonde

by jennine on December 19, 2008

As a brunette, I’ve had to learn almost all my blonde terms from Kezia, who, over the years has done honey blonde, bronde (which she is now) and a cool Hitchcock blonde. I never heard the term before, not even in film theory class, where it’s inevitable to talk about Alfred Hitchcock, who, almost always cast a young, cool, Nordic-looking blonde as his lead female in his films. He is also the maker of one of the most terrifying films a fiver year old girl can see, ‘The Birds’. One afternoon, many, many years ago, at my grandmothers house, I turned on the the television to see the horror of school children being chased down by killer birds. The experience was traumatic.

This morning I spit out my tea when I came across this new ‘The Birds’ 45th annivesary limited edition commemorative Barbie on What’s Wrong with The Zoo. This lovely Barbie is dressed exactly like the character played by Tippi Hedren complete with real fake birds attacking her. All for about $40. So, if like me, you’ve been traumatised by the film, you can do reenactments in therapy sessions…or you can give her to a 5-year-old girl to give her something to talk about in therapy.

ps.. sorry about the quotes in the image text, I’ve been using a German computer with German Photoshop, they use different quotes than in English.

Jennine, by the way…are you in FFM over the Holidays?
If yes,….what about meeting & greeeting after Christmas? My family is living 1,5 h from FFM and when i´ll travel back on the 28th or 29th i anyway will have to drive through Frankfurt.
Let me know if you´re in town.

How did you not talk about the Hitchcock Blond in your film theory courses?! That baffles me… obviously you need a class taught by a 1970s Feminist ;)

I always love the special pop culture related Barbies…even as an adult I still want to buy them.

ah we talked about hitchcock’s use of blondes but there was no ‘hitchcock blonde’ i heard… then again, i took film theory from a 90′s spike lee affectionato. fight the power.

All my life I despised Barbies (they died tragic deaths throughout my childhood), but this one I would actually enjoy sitting on my bookshelf :-)

Oh my god, I love it! Barbies played such a huge part of my childhood, and I’d take any excuse to hold one in my hands again. Also, combined with one of my favourite movies, this doll’s a winner.

Wow! I actually came accross images of this Barbie when I seached Google images for Tippi Hedren images for this post (http://blog.marketpublique.com/post/63571556/pencil-skirts), and I was like WHAAAT?

I had no idea it was new or even an anniversary edition!

This is almost worse than the one that says “Math is Hard”. Girls everywhere will want to watch the movie after they see this Barbie, and I really do not recommend it. I mean, kids DIE in it! Once again, Barbie is being a bad influence on children.

Oh my gosh, this is too neat! Tippi was so glam in this movie, carrying her bird cage in that fantastic wiggle dress. How iconic!

I have to comment because
1. I use to collect Barbies and this makes me want to start collecting again. I want this Barbie, it’s too awesome.

2. My name is Kezia, so I did a double take when I saw another Kezia commenting on this post. Hi to the other Kezia

Ah, Barbie. Universal repository for our collective projections and neurosis! Like many, I was a Barbie collector/torturer as a girl. I once got it in my mind that Barbie should be BLONDER, so I leaned hear agaitnst a light bulb(hey, I was 7 or 8). Her plastic head melted, becoming one with the bulb. The smell of signed doll hair. Truly toxic!
