The Coveted Wears Something Today

by jennine on September 24, 2008

Holy moly… The Coveted is in a book… what I wore today: Fashion Remixed Online from Bejing to Berlin, about the phenomenon of documenting personal style and sharing it online. I must admit, I’m a little surprised… they did ask me for permission a few months ago via wardrobe_remix, but when initial discussions about the old title.. WIWT: Fashion Narcissism Online there was a lump in my throat. But then they changed the title… but it still leaves me pondering if photographing myself is really narcissistic. I’m able to feel better knowing the community that has sprung up around the personal style format is really wonderful, that because of this community it’s lead to greater discussions about fashion beyond cute outfits. It’s changed my life, and it’s changed the lives of others, so in that respect the what I wore today phenomenon is truly well deserving of a book.

btw… there’s a helpful post on Independent Fashion Bloggers on taking gorgeous ‘what are you wearing today’ pics.

Wow! Very cool Lady Coveted. I am really bad about taking pictures of myself. I usually come out looking drunk, high or both. And I’m not!

You take great pictures!
I think we all are narcissistic regardless of taking our pics for the public to see it or not.

Looks great! I’m so glad they changed the title. I’ll have to find a copy of this and check it out. It appears there will be several wardrobe_remixers featured in it.

congrats on getting in. I think it’s a small part narcissism, but more about sharing and growing in fashion.

Congrats! You’re too sweet to be a narcissist. :-)

I’m in it too, and I think in general we’re in very good company, there are tons of W_Rs in there!

This book wouldn’t be worth its salt if you weren’t in there. :)

And honestly, fashion blogging might tend towards self indulgence but no more than any other job or hobby a person enjoys. I indulge myself by dishing with other folks about the things we wear the same way I indulge myself baking cupcakes or reading endless political analysis.

In fact, I dare say that I indulge myself by seeing and reviewing movies. Just because it’s my job doesn’t mean I don’t love it! But a dayjob is supposed to be the opposite of an indulgence, right? So it’s all meaningless!

This went on a lot longer than I intended, but just remember that any narcissism you might be engaging in is totally mitigated by how much happiness and inspiration you bring others. :)

Wah! That’s awesome!
I’m glad they changed the title, and I don’t find it narcissistic at all. Then again, this is coming from an artist that with the exception of drawing pigeons with Napoleonic complexes, draws nothing but herself. I have been told that I’m an egoiste for all the self portraiture, but eh.

I enjoy looking at the pictures people post of their daily outfits, especially when they have an individual sense of style like yourself.

Oh my goodness! Thank you all for your lovely comments and words of encouragements…

as for the narcissism thing… who knows really? but i guess i should get back into taking photos of myself again, it’s been a while, i think a few weeks.
