Standing on the shoulders of giants

Shoulder pads are tough… they used to be in everything, and I mean everything. You couldn’t buy a jacket without shoulder pads. I for one was always comfortable with my natural shoulder’s shape, but as shoulder pads faded away, I was happy because I could feel more dainty and feminine. Since Maison Martin Margiela has been padding it up, I’ve thought that it was interesting to look at on a model on the runway, and Style Bubble did some great styling with shoulder pads a few months ago. Until today, I haven’t seen anything that I really loved that had severe shoulder pads.

Rosenmunns, a pair of San Francisco-based designers made this wonderful shirt dress with the biggest shoulder pads, I’ve ever seen. For some reason, I just had to try it on… well, also because the Sydney half of Rosenmunns was in the shoppe at the time… but honestly, I was impressed how simple yet avant garde this dress was.

Trying on the shoulder pad dress was shocking at first. I felt like a football player. My boyfriend was said in his German accent, “I want to see you dancing to Kraftwerk in that dress.” But walking around, I felt a little like a 1940′s lady of leisure, or well, more like a 1980′s Dynasty hag.

The truth is, that this dress works for the super soft cotton jersey, and the fact that I feel beautiful in it, creative, smart and lovely, which is what a dress should really do for a woman.

That dress looks so amazing on you – did you buy it in the end?

oh, i really want to buy it, it’s $250… which isn’t bad, but i have to buy an slr camera before i buy any more dresses… in the end, i’ll probably buy the dress before i move to germany.

I spent Sunday afternoon writing and being inspired by girlie movies. In Pretty in Pink, in the scene where Duckie gets his heart crushed because Andy is going out with Blaine, i couldn’t get over Annie Pott’s shoulder pads on that 80s does 40s top she had on.

Great silhouette, but wow they were severe! I’m on the fence with the shoulder pads.
