Beam me up

by jennine on October 15, 2007

Since the advent of laser technology, it was only a matter of time before someone integrated these cool lights into clothing, even if in concept. I think it was ten or eleven years ago, for Halloween, I wired up a giant pink dress with LED lights for my ‘Glenda, good witch of the north’ costume. It was awesome.

Hussein Chalayan recruited designer Moritz Waldemeyer to install and program lasers into jeweled crystal dresses. They used mirrors to interact with the lasers to create these ethereal beams of light coming from these heavenly creatures.

[The dresses are] based on the idea of celebrety and sun worship… Where the rays of light represent the performer or points of spectacle.
~Hussein Chalayan in the Making of SS/08

These amazing dresses are still concepts… I couldn’t imagine bringing one home… oh dear, my cats would go berserk!

Ditto for a Glinda pic, please!
And I once saw a prim dress with multi-coloured fibreoptic lights in it. Does that count?

Thanks for the great pics. I’ll be presenting on Chalayan’s collection as well as some of his past collections in my Critical Studies in New Media grad class in about 2 weeks. These close ups are so timely thanks!!!
