I have always been a sucker for graphic design. I hate to say it, but I do judge books by their covers and even refused to read poorly set type. That’s why when I came across Frau Blau, an Israeli design duo I was smitten by their presentation of their winter line. The collage/illustrations are just so wonderfully executed, and they give me enough of an idea of the cuts and textiles. I wonder if I were a designer I would try to have my look books illustrated, if anything but to stand out from the rest of the pack. Heck I fell for it. Besides, the dark whimsy kind of reminds me of Edward Gorey, one of the few people to delightfully make light rather grim stories (you know like The Gnashleycrumb Tinies).
I also judge books by their covers. It’s always interesting to me when I see re-releases of an older book with a jazzy, new “chick-lit” type cover. Is there anyone who doesn’t love Edward Gorey? As for Frau Blau, it’s a great concept, although a bit too “busy’ for my eyes. However, it’s one of the more innovative approaches to showing a collection online that I’ve seen.
Ooh I love these, particularly the top one, so evocative. Also, I’m pretty late with this, but your new hair rocks - it’s pretty much my fantasy hairstyle, fantasy because my hair is too curly to ever pull it off. Love the blog!
Right before I got to your sentence about Edward Gorey, I was thinking “Hmmm…so Edward Gorey.” I always thought there was something chic about him!
that is true, you know i dont know what exactly makes me think of gorey, because the line quality and medium are completely different. i guess it’s just an aura.
Beautiful illustrations, I confess I didn’t know about Edward Gorey, its always great to expand your horizons and I’m delighted to have discovered him, Thanking you!
Wow. These look beautiful. Well I judge many things from their outside, I have to admit but even more from their haptic quality. I can’t write on just any kind of paper a book also has to have a certain quality otherwise I really hate to read it, esp. when I have to. I don’t like antique books, becaus I don’t like their smell, I somehow just like new books, well yeah and type of course I can’t write in Times New Roman for example I just hate crappy grachic design…
