Ok, back to business… When I was in college in another country, and I had just left my husband, and facing a very serious depression, I picked up crochet. But no matter how hard I tried, I could not make a scarf with straight lines, so I ended up making ‘comedy scarves’ which were asymmetrical and absurdly long and brightly colored. Then I ironed patches on them. It was a hit. One of the great qualities of crochet is that you can make it whatever you want, and no one has to like it. I find it to be very therapeutic.
Naik Fur, Amy Hemmens, a Sacramento-based designer caught my eye on IQONS. Mostly because of her lovely works in crochet, they are free flowing and expressive:
Currently experimenting with garment label- NAIK FUR: a couture language that focuses on the development of fashion and textiles alongside other mediums for the purpose of self discovery and conscious research.
What makes this label uncommon and in some ways difficult or absurd, is the fact that it has purposely been reduced to a couture line only. In other words, a lot of hand stitches, crochet/knit, and use constant use of old-fashion craft methods. every garment made is a “one-off” and never to be repeated or mass produced.
How lovely to be able to articulate personal development through fashion. It’s so abstract and subtle, yet we all do it at some level, by developing confidence, taste and economic stature, general comfort in our own skin with age, and time spent learning. That all affects personal style. I really like who Hemmens has integrated it as a very real conscious part of her life, it will be interesting to see where she takes this.
She also has a great blog of her current stuff here.

OMG!!! thanks for sharing this and the other blog you recently pointed out. they’re both VERYVERY inspiring! i’ve been doing web searches for designers who are reminiscent of sandra backlund when it comes to knits and hadn’t found anything. so this is really a treasure for me!
I finally taught myself how to crochet earlier this summer (though haven’t actually made anything yet) and am amazed at its versatility. Many compare crochet to sculpture, and its amazing what is seen in fashion with that idea in mind. I love the green dress that is shown!
Love that dress.
Brown dress is amazing! There’s sense of both vintage and modern in it… mmm…
I so identify with the therapeutic nature of making things. And never according to a pattern.
